In the elderly its suprising how quickly a trauma can result in a chest infection ,its because the sudden rise then drop in body temp due to the fall,,,,,,,,,morphine has many different effects on people and the aged even more so.......it was possibly the onset of the chest infection that caused the fall hence the confusion.
He will be a quite alot of pain for a while yet......

Have spoken to the doc and hubby is now on antibiotics and steroids. She said the chest infection could be causing the confusion. A dear friend of ours said her husband who is disabled after a stroke gets very confused when he has a chest infection so between them I feel a bit better about it all.

Thank you for all your advice. xx :-) :-)

I was a long time (weeks) in a trauma ward for serious leg injuries necessitating several surgeries. For the pain I was frequently given morphine and other pain killers.
Did not cause confusion just tiredness.
However a serious infection of the bone did cause unusual symptoms
You would be best advised by your Doctor. Tell him your concerns.

I think you have to take into account that he is probably a bit traumatised by the fall and stay in hospital as well as being in pain.

I have never taken morphine but I do know a couple of people who have. One had no problems, the other suffered confusion and hallucinations. So best to refer back to his doctor.

Has anybody had any dealings with this sort of thing.
My hubby had a bad fall and cracked a few ribs (he's 75) last wednesday.
He went to hospital as I thought he had also broken his ankle, thankfully not.

Returned home but was getting in much more pain and early hours of monday morn went to A&E. Had x rays and ct scan because they thought he had damaged his insides when he fell, again thankfully not.(after 11 hours in A&E) he was transfered to a ward for overnight . he was on morphine while in A&E and on the ward.

he has come home today but is very confused and saying some strange things. My doctor has just rung to say the ct scan showed up he has a chest infection but the hosp said they didnt feel they had to treat it.He has now been given antibiotics. He also has COPD and is diabetic.

Will try to speak to the doc if he is no better tomorrow but that is like pulling hens teeth.lol.

Does anyone think the chest infection would cause the confusion or the morphine.

You have all helped me with your suggestions in the past so would welcome your views.

Thanks for reading.

AnnMarie.
