Short of keeping some one awake or cutting their throat, is there a cure for snoring?

Is the snorer aware the noise is upsetting the person they live with? If they won't recognise the distress, there isn't a lot that can help.

The following link has some suggestions they might like to try.

I currently have a really snotty cold and, last night, I was coughing, sneezing and trying to sleep.

Every time I snored, and it was going to happen with the state of my sinuses at the moment, OH prodded or tickled me.Eventually I explained to him that I was doing my best and he kind of migrated to his side of the bed.

When I woke up later to go for a wee,he was sawing logs over there and I didn't even know he had a chain saw!

I was told by all my family that I was coming near to being killed while I was slumbering in bed. My snoring was very bad and so bad I would wake up as if I was choking and heart was racing. No one was getting any sleep. My brother has to have oxygen overnight for the same problem. I went off to see the doctor and was given a hayfever nose spray. Told to squirt just inside and to the side of my nose at bedtime. This was to widen the blood vessels. I have been doing this for 6 months but although not cured, it is so much better now and the household hardly hear me.

Ive been snoring all my life (when sleeping) . Been woken by an angry wife digging me in the ribs hundreds of times.. It's not as though the act was deliberate, I blame my sinuses. Thing is for half my marriage we have been sleeping in separate rooms.
When I spent a long time in hospital due to injury I was informed by staff and patients that I snore loudly every night. Isn't there a cure by now? :-\

I snore so loud I wake myself up !! Often wonder what the noises are as I emerge .

Even worse I dribble too so have to have pillow protectors under the pillow case .

Even then it's new pillows every so often as they take on the look of having been peed on !!

:-(

There's no catch-all cure for a multitude of causes. If you read the link, one of the first suggestions is to have a ball sewn onto the back of your pajamas. This is to encourage you to sleep on your side.
If that isn't possible because of an injury, work through the other suggestions.

Apparently my snoring used to 'rattle' OHs 'ear wax' and could be heard in other rooms. Over a year ago we both stopped smoking cigarettes and swapped to e-vapours. That's virtually eliminated the catarrh produced. Result? No more snoring!

I stopped smoking nearly 20 years ago but it didn't stop my snoring.
Heard in the next room? I can be heard in the next house :-0

Have a word with your GP. He might be able to tell you why you snort and suggest a solution.

The surgery in your list doesn't guarantee a cure and is painful :-\

The day my Father died I was staying in a hotel in Manchester. I was in a shared room with this other man who had complained about my snoring.
My wife phoned me to advise me of Father's death.
That night I did not snore
Strange

There is not much you can do about snoring, you either put up with it, use ear plugs or sleep in separate bedrooms which isn't an option for us. A Vick inhaler is quite good, but only gives temporary relief. GP could probably prescribe something more efficient, again, you'd have to talk to him/her about it.

Get it checked out you could have sleep apnoea. Take it from one who knows it can be dangerous. Snoring can be part of the condition.

SuffolkVera

SuffolkVera Report 7 Mar 2016 12:58

OH's sister has sleep apnoea and has to wear a mask at night. If the snoring really is bad, do get it checked out with the doctor.

In the early days of our marriage we had a small house, two children and no spare bedroom and OH's very loud snoring regularly sent me to the couch downstairs. Even then it was like being in the path of an express train. I got so tired that one day I said if he didn't see the doctor I would leave. The result was that he had a piece of bone that was surplus to requirements removed. We all had more peaceful nights for many years.

As we have got older I find it difficult to sleep and he snores more. All I can say is thank God for spare bedrooms :-D

David

David Report 7 Mar 2016 16:15

That's lovely Vera. I'm fortunate in having the spare bedroom. When I was younger
I felt "selfish" at her not sharing the bed.
But as you get older you know a decent night's sleep is more important <3

magpie Report 7 Mar 2016 17:42

I would hate to be in separate bedrooms, actually I would hate to be in separate beds, and so would OH, but maybe after 52 years we're just kinda used to snuggling up together! As for snoring, we just manage!

David,I apparently snore like a trooper :-S.I had to share a Hotel room with my daughter recently and she said it was the worst nights sleep she had ever had.I never heard a thing :-D.I lost count of the times she woke me up pleading with me to stop snoring.
Have you tried those strip things you can put on your nose? I don't know if they work or not.Not having ever tried them myself. My OH used to snore big time but over the last few years he seems to have stopped and I have taken over .
