StrayKitten Report 21 Apr 2016 20:58

I got an email yesterday, we are unable to renew there might be an issue with your card.. I was tempted not to bother,

Alas I renewed £8 something for 6 months, I don't care what others pay I'm happy with my subs I don't post much so not sure why I still renew but it's like putting on an old pair of slippers ya know ya should throw them out. But you just can't lol

Wendy ..............

I had to put my place of residence as United Kingdom

...... that was GR's only solution to getting them to bill me in £ sterling.

Otherwise, they said they HAD to charge in the currency of the country where you live ............. or the nearest country if the currency of you country is not on their list of "accepted" currency.

I live in Canada, they insisted they had to charge me in $US ...... because Canadian $ were not on their list :-S

That meant that I got an inflated $US subscription fee charged to my credit card. The credit card company then converted the $US to $CAN, which was more, and I THEN also had to pay a fee for converting the $US to $Can

So ............... my country of residence is United Kingdom

Thank you Tenerife Sun ,

Your payment has been received and you are now a member of Genes Reunited.

Your receipt reference: GSY_058044750_Dc00

You have been billed €21.56 EUR for a 12 month Standard membership.

It's easy to get started on your family history:

.................................................................................................
I can't understand why they charge me in euros (about £16.00) other than I live on a Spanish governed island. I pay in sterling from an English bank

I have had continuous membership since 2003. I have emailed GR countless times and received every automated reply at their disposal but never a personal reply. I have now given up writing to them, which is probably what they hoped I would do
:-(

I'd keep quiet if my sub was that low Ann - it might be a glitch! LOL

8.96, continuous since 2003. :-S

AnnMarie ...............

yes, it is unfair, but they do seem to consider upgrading to one of the more expensive subs to be a break in your membership :-(

AnnG ................ I wasn't saying this thread had become, or even would become, acrimonious. It was just a comment that many previous ones have done so.

AnnMarieG

AnnMarieG Report 16 Apr 2016 12:02

I have never lapsed my membership but did have premium for a short while. Dosnt seem fair to be 'punished' like this though as they have had more money out of me in the long run. never mind. :-( :-(

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 16 Apr 2016 11:56

Think back Annmarie to if you ever had even a slight break (maybe a hiccup with your card, or late paying, or were ill and didn't get there on time. It does seems strange that yours should be so much more. Is that standard membership all the way through. If you previously had a different membership then reverted to standard, you would have paid a higher rate when you changed.
I have always just had the basic standard membership.

Hi All. I dont use this site very often now for research as I have had lots of health problems but often check in for a look at all your posts. I have been a member since 2005 continuous and this year when I renewed I was charged £17.96 for the year. I am pleased for all of you that have paid a lot less but feel a bit miffed to say the least. Will think seriously about renewing next year, me thinks. :-S

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 16 Apr 2016 09:12

Sylvia, this thread has not become acrimonious as yet, just a few puzzled members. who knows where the amounts come from. Maybe some had a problem with a change of credit card or something.
If it does become acrimonious I will delete it.

Cynthia Report 16 Apr 2016 07:53

Just looked back.....£8.96 in March and I have been a continuous member since 2003 too.

No mention of loyalty but lots of advice about how easy it is to start your family tree, start searching, send messages and share trees. :-S

Now, why didn't I realise that this was a family history site all those years ago? doh!
:-D :-D

Guinevere

Guinevere Report 15 Apr 2016 21:51

Hmm. £8.96 this year. £7.96 last year and the year before.

I joined in 2003.

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 15 Apr 2016 20:32

But Phyll joined after the grandfather clause was put in place ......

........ that was done by ITV when they bought GR in 2007.

she is paying more-or-less the same amount that was in place when she joined

However, threads complaining about the discrepancies that different members pay pop up about every 2 or 3 months, and tend to become very acrimonious!.

I can tell you that this site is not worth more for ME than the amount I'm paying , I do not know about others. I would not rejoin if it is increased in September when my sub is due. I spend most of my time helping other members, and that is the reason I stay, but I also do that on a couple of other sites that are in fact free :-).

It never has been worth paying the super fees for Gold and now Platinum ...... GR doesn't carry its own records, it mostly accesses those on FMP, and many of them are available for free elsewhere (eg on freebmd).

Phyll

Phyll Report 15 Apr 2016 19:58

I paid £8.96 in January for 6 moths. Have been on GR for 8 years - blimey is it really that long.
