Kath ..........

I also had freesias in my wedding bouquet :-D ........... and OH still buys freesias on our anniversary (next one is 49!).

OH does the weekly grocery shop now, but I write it ...... I always write down flowers, and leave the choice up to him. So I always have vases of flowers around, in addition to whatever I might cut from the garden,

Early in the spring I had a small vase of 4 different kinds of Daphne near my desk, and kept getting waves of that glorious scent. Two of the D odora bushes are in flower again :-D

:-D :-D Chris I'm happy with the thought of a posy
of flowers from my family as it seems so with others
on this thread.

Freesias are my favourite flowers. I had some in my wedding bouquet and I would rather have a small bunch of them than any great big expensive bouquet.

I also love sweet peas but the best perfume so far this year was from two huge white wisteria. Their perfume filled the whole garden

I have a white azalea with a glorious perfume, and I can remember one at primary school which also had the beautiful scent, but modern ones dont seem to have it.

To me, a rose or a carnation is not a rose or carnation without a perfume.

I have white violets growing, not such a strong smell as the violet violets, but still lovely.

And there is a New Zealand shrub, which I have managed to grow from a cutting, called Alseuosmia, which means perfumed grove, a very apt name. The glorious scent is what you notice when walking through the 'bush' (what you would call forest), but it takes quite some searching to find the actual source of the smell.

Not the black lily. There was one flowering at the back of mum's garden when I was about 9 or 10 (more than 70 yrs ago) and I picked my way carefully over the other plants so I could smell it. I still gag at the memory of the smell. Uggghhh.

That's Elder, Sylvia.
Yesterday, I was taking my usual lunchtime walk, when a pungent smell hit me from behind a hedge.
'Mmmm', though I, 'Is that the elder?'
Walking back, there was no smell.
'Oh' I realised, 'It was those two young lads from the industrial estate I caught behind the hedge last week, having their lunchtime joint ' :-D

Love freesias, sweet peas, roses, etc

can't stand lilies, hyacinths, and others with strong overpowering scent

Lovely to look at, but not inside the house for me!!

maggie .............. I more often think of privet as smelling of cat p* :-D

Sharron, privet is in flower at the moment - and that is VERY powerful - could it be that?.
Lovely in small doses, but I find it overpowering when I walk right by it.

Love the perfumes of freesias, roses(although I dislike rose perfume, bath oil etc), wallflowers, sweet peas, carnations (pinks), Mahonia, lilac, hyacinths, Lily of the Valley lavender, night scented stock, Nicotiana and probably lots more. :-)

I have a Daphne Odora - fantastic smell

Love lilac, roses, white violets - which I don't seem to find any more, freesias, stocks, sweet Williams, lilies, hyacinths especially

There is something in the garden that smell wonderful and I don't know what it is or even if it is in the front or back garden but, occasionally, there is a waft of it upstairs.

One year we had pots of night scented stocks on the flat roof of the wet room so they wafted in during the night.

Fred's Daphne Odora bush is by the front wall and that gives us some wonderful scent at a time of year when there is nothing much else smelling lovely.

These last few weeks I have been treating myself to some flowers . At the moment it's a bouquet of roses and white lilies .

I buy them as rose buds and closed trumpets of lilies and as they open up I cut out the pollen stamens so they don't drop and stain the sideboard which is a light wood

The perfume of the lilies is very strong .almost a bit overpowering too but I love flowers and am enjoying them whilst I can

I have joined the local horticultural society and am hopeful to learn some flower arranging designs
