I'm thinking of sending my American cousin some Cadburys Chocolate bars from the UK.
Now I know that Cadburys were taken over by Kraft and that people say our English chocolate doesnt taste the same now. (I've not had any for years, so don't know)

Does anyone know if Cadbury's chocolate in USA tastes different to ours?
I'm trying to find out if both Countries taste the same or not, as if its the same, there's no point me sending her some!

Moves to prevent retailers importing British-made Cadbury chocolate into the US have scandalised some expats, who say US-made Cadbury chocolate is inferior - and who often view Hershey's, the most popular US chocolate, as beneath contempt.

As I understand it, most American chocolate tastes nothing like ours - not sure why.

I have also heard that British mass-produced chocolate is not the same as it used to be, but I haven't eaten any for years.

I like chocolate, and get mine from Hotel Chocolat. Only in small quantities because it is expensive, but has a much higher cocoa content than Cadbury's etc. They have recently opened a shop in USA, half expecting it to fail, because the taste is so different, but the Americans can't get enough of it!!

I have just been googling and it says a lot of our chocolate is now made abroad!! Cadbury's comes from Poland.

However, Thornton's, another quality brand, is made in the UK, and is easily available.

I would send your American cousin some "proper" chocolate. :-) :-)

Cadbury's chocolate has been different in the US and in Canada from the UK version since at least the mid-1970s, when my niece pointed out that the nut and raisin bar she had just bought at the store down the street tasted nothing like the ones she bought in Manchester. I had been here long enough (about 8 years) that I had forgotten what English chocolate tasted like.

US chocolate is even a bit different from Canadian chocolate ......... or it used to be as I haven't eaten mass-produced chocolate for many years.


One thing to think about ................... is your cousin now so used to US chocolate that she would not like the British taste?

Another thing to think about ............ will it get through the US Customs, and will the taste be affected by the extremes of temperature experienced during the travel. Cargo holds in planes are usually not heated, but equally postal trucks in the US are usually not cooled that much.

Ate Hershey chocolate whilst in the States years ago - not nice at all

My sister who lives in Florida always takes Galaxy bars back with her as she can't get it in Florida and she likes it more than Cadburys.

Maybe it's something to do with ambient temperature, I imagine places like Florida would end up with a chocolate drink in a packet instead of a crunchy bar in mid summer not a problem in the UK! :-)

Jan, sorry about the delay in replying. By "proper" chocolate I meant that made by any of the smaller companies, of which Thorntons is just one. It is also easily available, as there are shops in most towns.

I don't know about the other companies, but Hotel Chocolat will deliver abroad. It is quite expensive, but the chocolate will be properly packed for travel and also getting past customs.

I was aware that Hersey Chocolate in the US tastes different to Cadburys, but the American firm Kraft took over Cadburys a few years back and changed the recipe.
So I had wondered if since the take over, that Cadburys would taste the same in both the UK and US. About 8 years ago I did send my cousin some Cadburys through the post before Kraft took it over, and she loved it.

I've checked at the Post Office and they said it will go through customs ok.
The only thing I'm worried about is, what other people have said, if it arrives like a chocolate drink! :-) Last time I sent her some wrapped up in lots of bubblewrap, it hadn't exactly melted but had got a bit soft! If I do send some, I know its a risk I'll have to take!

There is only one Chocolate and that's Cadburys
All the rest are Imitations and horrible ;-) ;-) ;-)

I agree with JoyBoroAngel that Cadbury's is the best! :-) At least it was before Kraft took over - since I haven't had any since then, I don't know if it still tastes good.
