Former panellist on TV quiz show Eggheads, CJ de Mooi, has been arrested in connection with an alleged killing over 20 years ago.

He was detained under a European arrest warrant at Heathrow Airport on Wednesday.

De Mooi, who lives in Monmouthshire, is wanted over an alleged killing in the Netherlands.

The suspect, 46, was held under his real name Joseph Connagh and will appear at London's Westminster Magistrates' Court later.

De Mooi revealed in his autobiography he punched a man who approached him with a knife and threw him into a canal in Amsterdam in 1988.

In the book, he wrote: "He caught me on the wrong day and I just snapped. I've no idea what happened to him."

De Mooi became a panellist on Eggheads in 2003 after winning a series of game shows.

hmm - only me who finds this interesting then?

AnnCardiff

he is an arrogant, smug, irritating person

RolloTheRed

RolloTheRed Report 22 Sep 2016 15:25

De Mooi claims it was self defense after he was attacked.
Under Netherlands and UK law it is not possible to obtain a conviction following an indictment solely on the evidence of the accused including confessions.
The paltry evidence so far revealed by the press is insufficient for ongoing detention let alone a EAW.

The matter is I think quite well filed under "boring" unless you wish ill on celebrities, politicians and the rich or the "arrogant, smug, irritating" as a general principle. For those so inclined they can get a weekly fix with a sub.. to Hello magazine or join Momentum.

fwiw I was myself tried for manslaughter back in the 80s but was found not guilty. Not an experience I would recommend though.

Ooh, Rollo.

You know what's coming next, don't you ..... from your fans, I mean. ;-)

I think he is an arrogant wotsit and is universally loathed by my family (and a number of friends on FB).

Regardless of this possible manslaughter charge he should certainly be held to account for being a pompous git!

Oh those comments were aimed at CJ

;-)

pompous git - like it - that's exactly what he is!!

InspectorGreenPen Report 22 Sep 2016 18:52

Yes, he is an arrogant, smug, pompous irritating person.

Apart from a couple of topics he wasn't that good on Egg Heads either so goodness knows why they asked him back a second time after getting rid once.

RolloTheRed

RolloTheRed Report 22 Sep 2016 19:01

I wouldn't know never having seen "Eggheads".

A EAW are only supposed to be issued on the basis that there is sufficient evidence to support a charge.Unfotunately some countries atre abusing the EAW using it for such stuff leading sometimes to long periods of imprisonment prior to trial.which tends to be dropped at the ;last moment. The brexiters have, quite rightly, complained about this but T May has chosen the EAW as something she wants to keep from the EU.

Even though an EAW cannot be challenged in a UK court.
Or a US extradition order either come to that.

"Take back control" - yes, but from who?

AnnCardiff

AnnCardiff Report 22 Sep 2016 19:57

rather hoping he gets life :-D :-D

RolloTheRed

RolloTheRed Report 22 Sep 2016 20:09

some people are getting a little ahead of themslves - the EAW requirements though scant do demand that there is an arrestable offence. So far they have just got what the guy wrote in a book - whuich is not admissable evidence - and that's it. They don't have any details of the alleged victim such as a name and crucially no body.

I wonder if they will trawl the canals ... might be interesting

As Ann said, his real name is Joseph Connagh.

Apparently, He adopted the name de Mooi when modelling, and he translates it as Dutch for “handsome”.

Modesty obviously isn't one of his greatest strengths.

Barbra Report 22 Sep 2016 22:57

Wonder what he did as a model body ? .face ? clothes ? awful arrogant man .so far up his own da da :-D

Elizabeth A Report 23 Sep 2016 04:38

If he classes himself as "handsome", that must make me the queen of sheba.

As previously said, i find him arrogant, smug, etc.
And he should not have been on eggheads for 2nd time, let alone 1st.

I have never watched Eggheads so I haven't a clue who this guy is.

Lost in translation, Bobtanian. ;-) :-0

AnnCardiff

AnnCardiff Report 23 Sep 2016 11:13

he's married to a man

RolloTheRed

RolloTheRed Report 23 Sep 2016 15:43

what relevance has that to his arrest ?

Under current English bail conditions de Mooi could well find himself required to answer bail for months while the authorities attempt to dig up some evidence. Some judges have been highly critical of this abuse of process. UKIP have been highly critical of it in other countries but never moaned about it in the UK.

It all depends to what degree the UK court decides to humour the Dutch as they faff around looking for evidence. Given the current trend to "take back control" quite likely not all that long.

De Mooi has learned that those who make a living out of being self publicists should watch their step. At least he knows he won't be executed twice over in AnnCardiff's self appointed court of public opinion.

I danced a jig to freedom 23 Nov 2001. We all have our little lists, let none of them be missed.

maggiewinchester

maggiewinchester Report 23 Sep 2016 18:01

I thought Ann was giving her opinion of him, then just pointing out a fact - he's married to a man!

Bit better than rambling on with opinions, pretending it's fact.

RolloTheRed

RolloTheRed Report 23 Sep 2016 19:06

Apart from adding nothing to the reason(s) why AnnCardiff thought that De Mooi's choice of partner was relevant to his arrest just why do you think this uninmportant and irrelevant information requires an exclamation mark ?

AnnCardiff

AnnCardiff Report 23 Sep 2016 19:14

I merely confirmed Bobtanian's assumption - nothing more, and my comment about him getting life was very tongue in cheek - FGS Rollo - move on!!!
