You're welcome Vera. It just doesn't ring true to me.

Oh.......I also asked if he was on Countdown. :-D

SuffolkVera Report 24 Sep 2016 18:44

Thanks Island. I did wonder what you could have said.

I generally avoid threads that are full of speculation but I too have wondered how much truth there is in this "story". Whatever you think of him, he is an intelligent man. Would he, or his book editors/publishers, have been stupid enough to put into print something that could possibly put him in jail?

Island Report 24 Sep 2016 18:30

I said that this man is a media whore - that means someone who will do anything for publicity! - also I questioned why he would put said alleged incident in a book. Has he 'embroidered' a story knowing it would attract attention.

I don't believe this story is what it is being implied.

OK?????

Island Report 24 Sep 2016 18:18

Who did that RR? You sad sad little person.

Was it 'media whore' that upset you?

If so, that says more about you than my post. A heck of a lot more!!!!

You do know it means 'some one who craves publicity' and not what your dirty little mind thinks!

Jeeeeez. Nothing changes on this board.

Gay, from its original meaning of joyful or carefree, began to adopt its alternative use as early as the 17th century when it began to be used to describe addictions to pleasures or decadence. A gay woman was a prostitute, a gay man a womanizer, and a gay house a brothel etc.

The use to denote homosexuality was a further extension of the word 'carefree' to denote someone who disregarded conventional sexual attitudes.

Whether CJ bats for the other side changes nothing. He is still annoying.

Marvin Gaye's birth name was Marvin Gay.
It can be a tricky subject.

My gran's aunt Beatrice married a William Gay, and this family brought my gran up for a while, though we didn't personally know this side of the family.
However, due to my genealogical studies, I'd filled in details to this side of the family, which was just as well.

My brother went to my gran's funeral in Cornwall. Gran, my dad and this brother all had/have distinctive piercing blue eyes, as apparently did gran's aunt
Brother was stood there, when a stranger walked up and said to him 'You're a Gay, you've got Gay eyes' :-0
Could have been difficult, but fortunately he knew about the surname.
Rather than be offended or burst out laughing, brother explained who he was.
They're also Johnson eyes, not Gay eyes.....

...and yes, William Gay had ancestors named Brighton. At the time, it was a joyous name to call your son - 'Bright and Gay'

What's in a name?

About 30 years ago I worked with two colleagues who had been given the Christian name/fore-name Gay.

While one seemed not to care, the other was more than a tad annoyed that her name had been hijacked by homosexuals and lesbians. She refused to use gay as a noun or adjective to describe them and, as I could see her point and she was a lovely colleague, I never used 'gay' in that context again.

I still don't, preferring to use the words 'homosexual' and 'lesbian'. An old allegiance, I know, but a valued one and I always wonder how many more people there are in her position who feel aggrieved about it.

My guess is that fewer young ones will be named 'Gay' in future and as it is such a pretty name that conjures up happiness it seems a shame.

Would you think it acceptable to call me a spastic? or a Downs Syndrome person a retard?

There's an awful lot in a word!

maggiewinchester

maggiewinchester Report 23 Sep 2016 23:48

Agree, Sue.
Nomatter what a person's sexuality, race, religion, colour, disability, 'class' (if a person's going to go down that route) if they're a nasty piece of work, they're a nasty piece of work.
No need to 'do a Daily Mail' segregation act!! :-D

Sorry I have been busy!

I RRd Bob for calling the man a poof!

Even though I dislike CJ intensely he's GAY and even I would afford him the courtesy of that label and not some 60's insult!

maggiewinchester

maggiewinchester Report 23 Sep 2016 23:33

So was I (I think)!
I lived in a tent in the Shetlands for 6 months, as there was nowhere to rent.
But then the tent (small 2 man tent) was, to me, my home, but I suppose that could be considered homeless :-D
I was never attacked by, and never attacked anyone though (but that sheep that got into the tent when I popped out for a pee in the wee small hours had a close shave) :-|

I also lived in a converted double decker bus as a child (just missed out on the windmill - I wasn't born then, but my 3 elder siblings were) and caravans, both as a child and an adult. Doesn't really make me 'trailer trash' does it?

On paper, I'm considered quite intelligent - and, somewhere, I've got those bits of paper to prove it :-D
I'm very untidy, though, and if anyone but a future employer asks me to prove I have those bits of paper, I don't want to know them. :-(

AnnCardiff Report 23 Sep 2016 22:19

CJ himself was also homeless at one stage in his life

maggiewinchester Report 23 Sep 2016 22:08

Just as an aside - Kevin Ashman (another Egghead) was born and brought up on a Council Estate in Winchester.
Oh - and Peter White (blind broadcaster) was brought up (in between attending a school for the blind in Worcester) on a different Council Estate in Winchester.

It has been mooted by some that Council estates equal ignorance/lack of academia/education. Not so.

maggiewinchester Report 23 Sep 2016 21:40

I agree Bob, but not sure its too common.

There was still no reason to hang around (if he was so scared) and throw the unconscious man into the canal.

My comment was the result of my observations of the character , on the many times I watched Eggheads...RR'd or not, that was and still is my opinion of him/her..

Bob

Maggie "homeless" people are often singled out for a mugging, maybe the mugger thinks they are an easy target..........

maggiewinchester

maggiewinchester Report 23 Sep 2016 20:45

I would question why anyone would try to mug a homeless man (as De Mooi claims he was at the time), and why, when he'd knocked him out, De Mooi then throw him into the canal to drown.
If he'd just left him on the ground and walked off, that man may still be alive.
