I have got a list which has the name of the traveler, the date issued and the passport number. Can this information be used to find out any more details IE where they have traveled ? The date is 1860. many thanks Barbara |

Available passenger lists that early don't tend to have passport numbers on them. As it is, they tend to be searchable only by name, not by document number. Cross Channel or Irish Sea lists don't have high survival rates, if at all. |

A tree on Ancestry (possibly yours?) has the following attached to Priscilla's profile |

Shouldn't think so Kath. Assuming Barbara's research is correct, he married Priscilla on 28 Mar 1854 |

To add more confusion my Walker Butterworth born 1857 to Priscilla had a cousin who lived across the road. Both born within days of one another. Both registered on the same day...Both called Walker. x |

Unfortunately, Walker Butterworth is a more common name than you'd think. |

Early to mid C19 passports were not issued in the same way as today with unrestricted travel options. Rather they were issued for specific missions and journeys with details in the passport document. Quite a few of these survive and are held by the holder's descendents / traded on document collector sites. The Foreign office has records of the grants of passports which often have enough info. to id the person ( it will have stuff such as peer of the realm, naval officer, trader, destination etc ). Whether these are in the public domain and if so how to obtain access I know not. Given that few people would have held passports and their reasons would often have been opaque I doubt the FCO would be keen on release even after all this time. A good place to start might be on specialist history buff sites rather than F.H. |

Yes that is the two cousins called Walker Butterworth. I have actually got both of the copies. I thought it was an error in the records at Summerset House because they were the last two on a page. Priscilla was able to sign her name. To think that they both went to register births on the same day, at the same time and used the same name. Thanks for you help. This site is so helpful x |
