I decided to renew my standard sub as it is now due.
I haven't been on here much recently as had a lot of other issues, also been on holiday.
When I just looked in ,it does seem a bit more interesting than it had become.

This site used to be one that I looked forward to having a laugh or a debate and really did help me cope with caring for my husband when I couldn't go out.that was well over 5 years ago.

Let's hope we can return to the respect we should have for the opinions of others.

So I may be contributing a bit more as long as it doesn't turn nasty.

You all know I'm not getting at you.

It's the RRs really ,and I suppose I put that wrongly as we all like to have our say.
And we all want to get these boards back to how they were.

Good evening Brenda
If you are the Brenda that ever so patiently
taught me to cut, copy and paste online,
I thank you again <3

Yes...it is I David...and you have thanked me before..
I found a lot of help on here in the early days.we even used to have some who would go and look at gravestones in areas far from our homes, but near to them...and even the tips nothing to do with family history.
This was the site that set me off and helped with hot matches to get back to the 17th century on the maternal side which could have been so hard.
I have met some lovely members and messaged a lot of you,so would find it hard to give up. <3 <3

Brenda, you helped me and showed a lot of patience at a time when I could hardly find my way around the internet I was on the verge of giving my PC to the bin man or a charity shop.
We all need help at times and you Brenda were very helpful <3 <3

Hi Brenda

Glad you decided to renew ..................

but sadly I think the glory days are over.

I have this feeling that the powers-that-be will take GR back to what it was before 2007, ie before it carried records .......... a place to build trees, meet other members on the Boards, and get help from members, and then just leave it to work or not.

Will that be enough for today's members, as it once was for us???????

Can you tell I'm getting depressed again about GR?

JoyLouise Report 8 Oct 2016 08:18

Brenda, I renewed a month or so ago after thinking about it for quite a while. My OH pointed out that I spend more on coffee with friends in a week than it costs to renew my subscription to GR.

I have had a good deal of help from people through this site for which I am grateful. I have also enjoyed participating in many threads.

Sylvia, I have no idea what it was like before 2007 because I did not join until a few years after that but I have enjoyed my membership nevertheless and have you and AnnC, among others, to thank for your help with my ancestors.

Chin up, Sylvia.

I hope you enjoy your membership, Brenda.

My subs are due in a couple of weeks. As they have always been on continuous renewal, they are only £8.96 for the year ( a very odd number).

I agree it isn't the same, I used to do lots of look ups and help people behind the scenes, but there are so few posts these days, so I don't bother.

Plus we have lost some dear friends over the years, still onwards and upwards, so I shall renew as well.

I also went on holiday, came back, looked in on GR Chat and saw tumbleweed.

Didn't bother for another three weeks, then in an idle moment thought I'd have another look and start posting again. Bang! RR'd twice in no time. Nothing wrong with the posts so guess someone was having a hissy.

Suffice to say. for those who don't chatter away in long running threads, I don't see any improvement. The RR button, high view to posts count and pomposity have ruined this board - in my opinion.

All the best Brenda, I'm sure you have many friends here who will be happy to chat.

Glad you are renewing Brenda, I still feel my subs are good value to hear from long time friends on here. I would miss it, even though not as much goes on these days.

LondonBelle Report 8 Oct 2016 09:58

I pay the higher sub but even so it only works out at about 5p per day! Now I ask you what can you buy for 5p nowadays?

I agree that the Boards aren't as active as they were but I still think it's good value for money....a very small price to pay for friendship :-)

Pleased you decided to renew, Brenda <3

I suppose it's up to us in many ways, do we ignore the RR as much as we are able and carry on or throw our arms in the air and move on......I'm for trying to carry on not that the site seems worried either way !

My subs are due within the next few days and I'm seriously considering not bothering renewing this time.

It's not the cost of renewal that worries me but the fact that the PTB don't seem to be bothered about what happens to GR anymore so why should I fund their complacency. :-(
