Felt at at last i was ready to clear hubbies wardrobe

i have already passed on his jackets and jumpers and good shoes to the local charity shop ,plus passed on for recycling his jim jams ,undies socks etc .

Couldn't go the whole hog though and empty his wardrobe full of shirts ,trousers , big selection of good ties etc

with the help of grandson we cleared it all out , got 4 black bin bags of manageable weight and have taken them to the local Sense Charity shop

i had signed up with them for gift aid so they can reclaim VAT

I had to wait till I was ready and today was the day .

really felt calm as i sorted and bagged . i know hubby would say "silly cow I cant wear em can I so let someone else get some use out of them"

He was very much into charity , he helped as much as he could afford with collections at his local catholic church which he attended every week

Thanked grandson for helping and told him grandad would be very pleased he had helped me

Feel very much at ease that its all done now , I have kept his dressing gown, hearing aids wallet ,watch and walking stick and these will be kept and not got rid of

Got rid of most .took some time to get rid of all and still have a few bits....and it's 5 years for me.

This reminds me of something similar concerning my dad who died in 1985.

The one thing I held onto was his last packet of Woodbines with just one cigarette remaining in it. I still have it.

Blimey woodbines remember them well .

If you were really hard up you could buy packs of five in a flip top pack

I have my Dad's hairdressing tools that I kept when he passed away over 30 years ago.

I don't look at them from one weeks end to the other, but I know they are in the drawer.

funny you kept the dressing gown, that's the one thing I kept of my lovely husband's things - he died fourteen years ago on the 21st of this month. The ties I gave to the charity shop this year - why the dressing gown I have no idea!!

Apparently our neighbours dressing gown is still hanging on the back of the bedroom door. His widow likes to see it when she wakes up. She's also kept his fleece hanging in the hall way although she does sometimes wear it if she's feeling chilly. As it's miles too big, she says it 'cuddles' her :-)

Most people we know who have lost their spouse take time to find new owners for their belongings; there is always some item they like to keep. Considering its Michael's anniversary, you've done amazingly well.

Well done, you're getting there. It's funny how we gradually come to terms with whatever life throws at us, some almost straight away, others take a long time. In your own time you'll get there. :-D

Well done Shirley, I am sure your Michael is pleased that you have passed on his things to help others, and to have your grandson help was good too, sharing the task must have made it a little easier and showed him how to help people too. Did he keep anything as a memento?

Well done Shirley. Its interesting to hear about people keeping their loved ones dressing gowns. My Dad kept my Mums, also here hearing aids, glasses and purse. It is 10 years ago today we lost mum.

Well done Shirley. I too have gone through this and the Red Cross came to the house to collect my husbands belongings. I couldn't walk past their stall in town for a while for fear of seeing his things there.

I also kept his dressing gown and a couple of shirts.

I kept, and smell frequently, his aftershave too.
