Scotland, Names of Witches, 1658.

New on Ancestry.

The passing of the Scottish Witchcraft Act in 1563 made witchcraft, or consulting with witches, capital crimes in Scotland. It is estimated that between three and five thousand women were publicly accused of being witches in 16th and 17th century Scotland, a much higher number than neighbouring England. Some men were also accused of witchcraft during this period, however, the number of women persecuted was far larger.
The outbreak of witch-hunting in the years 1658-1662, the period in which this list of names was created, is generally agreed to represent the high water mark of Scottish persecution.

It was Scotland where witches were burned. There were none burned in England.

I have it on good authority that there are several covens around here.

Somebody in my family was hung as a witch poor love

Sarah Wildes (née Averell/Averill; baptized March 16, 1627 – July 29, 1692 [O.S. July 19, 1692]) was wrongly convicted of witchcraft during the Salem witch trials and was executed by hanging. She maintained her innocence throughout the process, and was later exonerated. Her husband's first wife was a member of the Gould family, cousins of the Putnam family, the primary accusers, and court records document the family feuds which led to her persecution.

maggiewinchester Report 27 Oct 2016 23:12

My gran died on 31 October!

There's a coven in Winchester. Learnt this whilst at Uni,
Dr Graham Harvey (a Pagan, and my lecturer in Paganism) was asked to join, as the 'token' male - but he refused.
He did, however, recommend 'The Malleus Maleficarum', to us, and his (at the time) recently published book: 'Listening People, Speaking Earth' :-D

I have to admit to living by the Pagan ethic: 'Do what you will, but hurt no other', and have it written on a piece of wood that hangs by the front door.

"The Witches of Belvoir" were accused of murder and were executed for it in 1619. Some of the players are in my family tree.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Witches_of_Belvoir

The popular cause of scapegoating has never really gone away and is as lethal as ever. No doubt the good burghers of Lewes will declare final victory this year.

It is rumoured that there is a cpven of witches in Burley, New Forest. My ex lives there so the rumour is probably true.

Sybil Leek, a self-proclaimed (and self-publicising) 'white' witch lived at Burley in the 1940's and 1950's.
