Many of the medieval so called witches were hedgerow herbalists. The church authorities didn't like women being being more successful than their 'administrations'.

Sybil Leek, a self-proclaimed (and self-publicising) 'white' witch lived at Burley in the 1940's and 1950's.

"The Witches of Belvoir" were accused of murder and were executed for it in 1619. Some of the players are in my family tree.

The popular cause of scapegoating has never really gone away and is as lethal as ever. No doubt the good burghers of Lewes will declare final victory this year.

It is rumoured that there is a cpven of witches in Burley, New Forest. My ex lives there so the rumour is probably true.

My gran died on 31 October!

There's a coven in Winchester. Learnt this whilst at Uni,
Dr Graham Harvey (a Pagan, and my lecturer in Paganism) was asked to join, as the 'token' male - but he refused.
He did, however, recommend 'The Malleus Maleficarum', to us, and his (at the time) recently published book: 'Listening People, Speaking Earth' :-D

I have to admit to living by the Pagan ethic: 'Do what you will, but hurt no other', and have it written on a piece of wood that hangs by the front door.

For anybody who might be interested, the Malleus is now available on-line.

Somebody in my family was hung as a witch poor love

Sarah Wildes (née Averell/Averill; baptized March 16, 1627 – July 29, 1692 [O.S. July 19, 1692]) was wrongly convicted of witchcraft during the Salem witch trials and was executed by hanging. She maintained her innocence throughout the process, and was later exonerated. Her husband's first wife was a member of the Gould family, cousins of the Putnam family, the primary accusers, and court records document the family feuds which led to her persecution.
