Not likely at all is it ....certain papers have always leaned left certain always right
The BBC since it started leaning is more likely to go left for instances..

If it doesn't close down then it changes to what they find acceptable...how is that not censorship...

Guinevere

Guinevere Report 14 Nov 2016 13:25

Or get them to change their ways, maybe?

Caroline

Caroline Report 14 Nov 2016 13:21

But by stopping funding the only obvious conclusion is to close the paper down...not likely to happen but they think it's worth a try.

A quick look at their FB page indicates that they are not out to gag 'free' press, just to try to persuade various companies not to advertise in them as, in their view, these papers tend to promote hatred and discrimination.

Ah but compared to much of the world press.....

Yes Dermot is being very deep maybe..

Newsflash...the DM which many seem to "hate"....latest headline online asking people to pick the darkest colour......start the protest.....

Guinevere

Guinevere Report 14 Nov 2016 13:09

No idea what you mean by that, Dermot. Care to expand?

Caroline, there are always been petitions and pressure groups often spontaneously appearing in response to a particular event - like the Nestle boycott, which we still apply all these years later.

Given Richard Wilson's family history I think his only agenda is to ask businesses not to advertise with papers that have hateful and inaccurate stories and headlines. It's up to the businesses whether or not to respond.

It's difficult to speak of a free press when the majority of UK newspapers are controlled by press barons who have a very right wing agenda. This limits what journalists can write about, so not so free,

Dermot

Dermot Report 14 Nov 2016 12:47

There won’t be agreement until each understands what the other is talking about.

Caroline

Caroline Report 14 Nov 2016 11:57

Just because I question them doesn't mean I dislike them so much...I've questioned whether we should have a group who may have a bigger agenda trying to control the free press. They may not like certain papers or news show fine no one makes you view them but why try and stop others . Their argument will be they're doing it to stop others being mislead or worked into a frenzy of hate whatever but is that their job to do.
It's not like we haven't all know which paper has which leanings forever so why suddenly start this.

Guinevere

Guinevere Report 14 Nov 2016 10:41

It's not that hard to do, Caroline. My son could do that easily on his PC. Cost - nothing but time.

Why do you seem to dislike the movement so much?

Caroline

Caroline Report 14 Nov 2016 10:28

Ah but who paid for the professional video....

Guinevere

Guinevere Report 14 Nov 2016 08:07

At the moment no one does. It's an online campaign, only, run through a facebook page, although they are setting up a website, from what I read.

So zero costs. That may change, I suppose.

Caroline

Caroline Report 14 Nov 2016 03:31

Without asking questions we'll never know.......so who funds them....

Von

Von Report 13 Nov 2016 22:41

Better then to reserve judgement until we do know!

Caroline

Caroline Report 13 Nov 2016 22:25

It's not a charity that I'm aware of more a protest group and yes they only really seem to be getting known this week......just because he seems to be a decent chap doesn't mean he is though in this day and age.....or he might be who knows.

Guinevere

Guinevere Report 13 Nov 2016 21:41

If it's a registered charity that information will be available. I only found out about them this week, so don't know much at all. Richard Wilson seems likes a genuinely decent chap, though.

Caroline

Caroline Report 13 Nov 2016 21:27

Like I said before it's not so much the campaign but the fact we don't know who is funding it, I think we should have clear information on that.

Guinevere

Guinevere Report 13 Nov 2016 21:13

It's a campaign called stop funding hate, Ann. They try to persuade businesses not to advertise in newspapers who they feel propagate hate.

There's a link in an earlier post of mine.

Their latest "success" is persuading Lego to stop advertising in the Daily Mail.

Gary Lineker is trying to persuade Walkers to stop advertising in The Sun.

AnnCardiff Report 13 Nov 2016 20:34

confused here - what hate campaign are we talking about here?

JoyLouise

JoyLouise Report 13 Nov 2016 14:43

OMG, Trump, Farage and Hopkins. :-0

What have the Americans done to deserve that? ;-) :-0 :-D

On the newspaper front, as I wrote previously, each has his own agenda. It's the nature of the beast.

Guinevere

Guinevere Report 13 Nov 2016 14:39

I strongly suspect she won't go, sadly.
