Have posted from time to time but having been slapped down a couple of times, I'm now a bit nervous of posting.

I 'look in' on this board from time to time (to time). As we all likely realise, GR very sadly is almost kaput.
It is such a shame when we recall so very many years ago how vibrant was the General Board ... a new page within the hour each Saturday! Those truly were the 'good old days' here.
(I always say 'today is the last of the good old days'. Who knows what 'they' will consider non-PC tomorrow!)

I tend to come on GR as last poster on most threads and seem to have the habit of 'killing' said thread. I'm good for something!

Anyway, in a few days I am orft to Jolly Old Oz for my first trip. Apparently it's sunny there ... although much cooler than the 50C / 122F plus I loved to work in years ago when the Middle East. (Excuse an old fella ... I'm just bragging again!)

I intend very soon to write a brief story here about when I recently presented to a very elderly gentleman in my apartment block ... HIS entry on the 1921 Canadian Census.

That's for another day, however.

Meantime, A Very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year for 2017 to all good folk on GR.

PS. If anyone starts this North American silliness saying 'Happy Holidays' tell 'em "No Christmas - NO holiday!"
So there!

Ciao. Take care.

Happy christmas to everyone & a healthy new year. I don't post much, been a member since 2004. Look in most days & keep renewing in the hope that 1 day someone will join who belongs to my trees & can knock my brick walls down. :-)

I am still here, hanging on because of the friends I have made
Hi Claire , only you can make yourself a stranger or a friend on here. get in there and post. We were all newbies once

Lovely to see so many on one thread, even if Claire doesn't seem to have checked in yet, although maybe she has and not replied. Claire is no newbie Uzzie, she is a returnee who is trying to find her way round a GR hard to recognise. :-) :-)

Hello Mary, A Happy Christmas to you. I don't think Claire has visited this thread yet.

Island Report 12 Dec 2016 09:40

Did you know that every time a thread is newly opened and no post left a baby elf dies?
It would be lovely if the 'read only' members would just post 'Happy Christmas' on each thread they look into :-)

I find it very disheartening to see so many threads with such a high view/post imbalance. Chat wont improve if members don't post.

Happy holidays, may your god go with you.

:-D <3

Do you think it is possible Island that they are non paying members who are unable to post?

If so...... Happy Christmas to all non paying members. :-D :-D :-D

SuffolkVera

SuffolkVera Report 12 Dec 2016 15:14

Island, I think a lot of the "views" come from people like me. We have to view a thread to find out what it is about, but once we have read it we move on. This might be because we find it doesn't interest us, or because we have nothing relevant to add.

I suppose I could post something like "I have viewed this thread and have nothing to add to it" but, if all the "viewers" did that , it would be a long boring thread.

Oh heck, now I feel guilty thinking of all the baby elves that have died because of me :-(

Happy Christmas to all GR members, posters and non-posters alike :-D

Ann, no. It isn't all down to non paying members. I know that for a fact.

Thread titles usually give a good clue to what the subject is. If I find that interesting I'll post on the thread. If the title doesn't appeal or it's a subject I know nothing of I don't open the thread.

How difficult is it to simply be sociable? This is Chat, not the reading room.

I don't post quite as much as I used to do when I was "housebound" looking after my late husband, but I do pop in and out and get a lot of support from members. I have been a member since 2005.
I admit it isn't quite the same as it used to be,but we still have a lot of us who enjoy the chat and don't get upset when some folks like to make waves, but we have to rise above it and ignore.
We must remember that when we started we didn't have a lot of other chat sites so it was very popular, now a lot are on FB and others.
So nice to see a few of the old members and a Happy .Christmas to one and all. <3

Well I am back from a few days in Sheringham, my favourite local town by the sea. My o.h. needed a break from work, the stress from his father having a severe stroke in Nov. 2015 and now in a carehome, has been enormous thanks to his sisters making mischief over the step mum being in the family home, and their joint bank account. Such bitterness and evil actions I have never seen before. My o.h.'s health isn't good, his knees and ankles are so painful he struggles to walk, his cataracts are developing apace so I have to do most of the driving, all of it when it's dark, and have to calm him down when he has panic attacks. It wasn't much of a break for me but we did eat out most days saving me the cooking and washing up for 6 out of the 9 days we were away.

I still have most of my Christmas cards to write, just managed the ones to go abroad while I was away so busy times ahead till Christmas is over.

Best wishes for Christmas and the New Year to all who visit this thread.

Lizxx
