So the media announce that because of the floods etc in Spain there is a shortage of veg (well who had not guessed thatw as going to happen? Then people in their wisdom are panic buying veg. One woman was actually pleased because she 'managed' to get 3 Iceberg lettuces. What is going to happen to those? Do her family really eat three large lettuce before they can go off. Talk about causing a shortage. and anyone would think it was all veg thatw ere short. Unfortunately people panic buying will now create a shortage. And how much of that is going to be wasted. People are so stupid. :-( :-(

Quite. There is plenty of veg available - all the UK stuff is unaffected - there was plenty to be had this morning in the supermarket. I'll bet most of that lettuce will end up in the bin :-(

I bought organic carrots from Scotland and a cauliflower for the Sunday roast.

We do eat salad in the Winter but I'm not going to lose the will to live if I cannot get any. I will also not pay the ridiculous prices they are asking.

The phrase 'seasonal veg' is very apt.

some booze is cheaper from supermarkets than cash n carry outlets............
allegedly it's retailers cashing in on the opportunities...........

There's no shortage of vegetables here in Menorca even after the island has been effectively cut off from the mainland several times this winter because of bad weather. Very little is actually produced on the island. Like England, we rely on imports from areas such as Almeria.
By the way,, we pensioners don't need our Winter Fuel Payment because we never get bad weather here in winter. For most of the time since Christmas, it has been colder, wetter & much windier than in England.

I really don't like Iceberg lettuce - prefer Cos :-D
I also try to eat veg that are 'in season'.

Iceberg is also one the lowest lettuces for nutritional value, it's not as if one would get scurvy if you didn't eat it!

In our fridge we have Hearts of Romaine (M&S) from Spain, the tail end of an Iceberg (not our prefered variety but 10 days ago nothing else was available) bought from the Farm Shop and a bag of Spinach leaves (Sains) from Italy. There's also a few 'Rocket' leaves still growing in the garden. We were expecting them to die off. Obviously they haven't!
We probably have a salad twice a week and a few leaves with something else in a daily lunchtime sandwich.

If people are buying a different variety of lettuce because their Icebergs aren't available - hands off!! :-D

Just been round my local Tesco. Doesn't appear to be a shortage of anything. No panic buying evident and most things ususal price, or maybe a bit dearer.

LSA is Land Settlement Association.

Apparently tthe rationing was brought in because restaurants and cafes were unable to get veg from their wholesalers so were buying up veg that was short from the supermarkets. Supermarkets wanted to protect their normal customers they said. With our Sunday roast we had broccoli spears, asparagus and white cabbage plus carrots, parsnips and butternut squash. We do eat lettuce in winter but can manage without it. Last Thursday in our large Tesco there were quite a few gaps in the veg section.

No shortages at Morrisons either.

Anyway once once we fall out with Europe we will be buying our veg from Trump.....!

We, or rather the wholesalers/large retailers, will be importing basic fresh food from whom ever has the cheapest prices.

It's about time the UK as a whole got back in touch with seasonal produce. Try and think 'food miles'.

Loads in the supermarket this morning. I panic bought peppers. ;-)
