HI Julie,

if you have your great great grandads's name and possibly occupation from the marriage cert, and your great grandad's name, approximate birth year and location, you or helpers on the board (if you post the details), can use the information to look for them together on online censuses for instance, to get more details for your great great grandparents, as well as looking on sites, free or otherwise, for parish records etc.

As others have said, we'd love to help if you have some details, or if you get stuck after searching yourself on the free sites mentioned in the thread. :-)

Another transcript of the 1891 census Margaret posted, showing that John Hill was a blacksmith, so it looks likely Margaret has found the right family. I used FMP aka FIndMyPast , a subscription site, to find this census information.

1891 England, Wales & Scotland Census
Boundry Street, Wallsend, Tynemouth, Northumberland, England

John Hill Head Married Male 48 1843 Blacksmith Northumberland, England <<<<<<<<<<<
Ellen Hill Wife Married Female 41 1850 - Howdon Pans, Northumberland, England
Elizabeth Hill Daughter Single Female 14 1877 - Willington Quay, Northumberland, England
John Hill Son Single Male 12 1879 Scholar Willington Quay, Northumberland, England
Robert Hill Son Single Male 10 1881 Scholar Willington Quay, Northumberland, England
Ralph Hill Son Single Male 8 1883 Scholar Willington Quay, Northumberland, England <<<
Eleanor Hill Daughter - Female 6 1885 Scholar Willington Quay, Northumberland, England
Tom Hill Son - Male 4 1887 - Willington Quay, Northumberland, England
Mary A Hill Daughter - Female 0 1891 - Willington Quay, Northumberland, England

The 1881 census for the same family gives John's birthplace as newcastle on Tyne, c1843.

Kucinta

Kucinta Report 14 Feb 2017 13:18

Given the name of John's mother in law, Mary Ramshaw, in the 1881 census, I would propose this potential marriage from FreeBMD instead of the one Margaret suggested. Remember the 1881 census showed John to have been born in Newcastle upon Tyne.

https://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl

Marriages Dec 1874
Hill John Newcastle T. 10b 152<<<<<<<<<<<
Pape Isabella Stephenson Newcastle T. 10b 152
Ramshaw Ellen Newcastle T. 10b 152 <<<<<<<<<<<
Usher John Newcastle T. 10b 152

EDIT: A search at the GRO site would seem to confirm this maiden name of Ramshaw for Ralph's mother:

HILL, RALPH RAMSHAW <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
GRO Reference: 1882 D Quarter in TYNEMOUTH Volume 10B Page 157

(as Margaret said, Tynemouth R D covers Willington Quay, where the census says Ralph was born)

So it looks like Ralph's mother is Ellen Ramshaw, who according to the 1881 census, was born c1850 Howdon Northumberland, or in the 1891 census Howdon Pans Northumberland.

This gives you more information to search for John and Ellen in their youth, with their parents, siblings etc.

have run out of lunch hour, so bye for now! :-)

I agree, Kucinta, I jumped the gun on that one. Will delete it so as not to cause confusion.

Kucinta

Kucinta Report 14 Feb 2017 14:05

Margaret - if not for finding mother in law, I would have heartily agreed with you that the Tynemouth marriage was very likely, as looked good on location, and timing in relation to the birth of the children.

Also Ma in law Mary Ramshaw might have been married and widowed more than once, and thus might still have been the mother of the bride you suggested - it took Ralph's birth ref with MMN Ramshaw to make me feel confident I did have the right marriage.

(and yes, I should be working :-( )

Kucinta

Kucinta Report 14 Feb 2017 15:34

This looks like Ellen Ramshaw with parents in census 1861.

Note Ellen is born Howdon c1850, as per Ellen Hill in census 1881 and 1891 already posted.

Mother is named Mary, and born c1811 Walker Northumberland - remember John Hill's mother in law was widowed Mary Ramshaw born c1815 Walker Northumberland (maybe she knocked a few years off her age) according to census 1881.

1861 England, Wales & Scotland Census Transcription
Globe Square, Howdon, Tynemouth, Northumberland, England

Thomas Ramshaw Head Married Male 49 1812 Shipwrights Howdon, Northumberland, England
Mary Ramshaw Wife Married Female 50 1811 - Walker, Northumberland, England

John Ramshaw Son - Male 13 1848 Labourer Howdon, Northumberland, England

Same family in the previous census of 1851:

1851 England, Wales & Scotland Census
Willington Quay, Tynemouth Union, Northumberland, England

Thomas Ramshaw Head Married Male 39 1812 Shipwright Howdon, Northumberland, England
Mary Ramshaw Wife Married Female 36 1815 Domestic At Home Howdon, Northumberland, England

John Ramshaw Son - Male 2 1849 - Howdon, Northumberland, England
Elloner Ramshaw Daughter - Female 1 1850 - Howdon, Northumberland, England

Note 14 yr old daughter in law Isabella Hedley Ramshaw. At this time 'daughter in law' was often used where we would say 'step daughter'.

I suspect Isabella was Mary's daughter by a previous marriage, and this is her marriage as a widow to Thomas:

First name(s) Thomas
Last name Ramshaw
Sex Male
Marriage year 1842
Marriage date 13 Dec 1842

Kucinta Report 14 Feb 2017 15:37

This seems like a possible birth for John William Hill, we know he was born c1843 Newcastle, from the census entries already posted.

His mother's maiden name is given as Sharp.

Name: Mother's Maiden Surname:
HILL, JOHN WILLIAM SHARP <<<<<<<<<<<
GRO Reference: 1843 J Quarter in NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE UNION Volume 25 Page 366

I found this Hill-Sharp marriage:

First name(s) John<<<<<<<<<<<<
Last name Hill<<<<<<<<<<l
Sex Male
Marriage year 1827
Marriage date 28 Jul 1827
Place Hexham
Description St. Andrew Aka Abbey
Spouse first name(s) Elizabeth
Spouse last name Sharp

Groom's last name Hill

Bride's last name Sharp<<<<<<<<<<
Bride's parish -
County Northumberland
Country England
Record set Northumberland And Durham Marriages
Category Birth, Marriage, Death & Parish Records
Subcategory Marriages & divorces

and I believe this is the couple, John and Elizabeth, with a son called John born c1843, in census 1851.

1851 England, Wales & Scotland Census T
So Buckingham Street, Westgate St Johns, Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, Northumberland, England

John Hill Head Married Male 44 1807 Shoemaker -
Elizabeth Hill Wife Married Female 48 1803 - Hexham, Northumberland, England
Ralph Hill Son Unmarried Male 16 1835 Shoemaker Newcastle on Tyne, Northumberland, England
John H Hill Son Unmarried Male 8 1843 Scholar Newcastle on Tyne, Northumberland, England

I think John H, is probably actually John W mistranscribed either from the census image, or from the original householder's return.

John senior's birthplace is given as Durham City on the census image. Note wife Elizabeth is born Hexham, where the marriage of John Hill and Elizabeth Sharp took place.

Hi Julie :-)

I'm not the expert, that the others posting here are, but it has crossed my mind ....

.... when you asked about the Parish Records that you paid for ... are you talking about the Genes Reunited Subscription?

I am probably one of the few that uses the GR Records! :-D

What kind of GR Sub do you have? Do you have Platinum with the Parish Records added on as an extra?

This is what you do to access GR's Parish Records (and other records)

At the Right Hand top of any GR page click on SEARCH...
A list of categories will appear.
You could chose "Search All Records" ... or "Births" for example.
You put in the details of the person who's record you are looking for and click "Search Now"

Boxes will appear with the number of results in each category.
eg.. Births Deaths and Marriages .... ANY PARISH RECORDS AVAILABLE ON GR WILL BE IN THIS SECTION.

I would also advise you to save any records you find to your computer, as once your subs (or credits on a Standard Sub) run out, you will not be able to view them again on GR without paying again.

Kucinta Report 14 Feb 2017 16:21

Re the maiden name of Ellen Ramshaw's mother Mary, who I believe married a Mr Hedley before she married Thomas Ramshaw...

I'm wondering if Ellen was born Eleanor ( that might be why she is Ellen R Hill in the 1901 census):

RAMSHAW, ELEANOR READHEAD Order
GRO Reference: 1849 J Quarter in TYNEMOUTH UNION Volume 25 Page 517

I looked for a birth ref for brother John, born c1848 according to census 1851.

Name: Mother's Maiden Surname:
RAMSHAW, JOHN READHEAD Order
GRO Reference: 1847 S Quarter in TYNEMOUTH UNION Volume 25 Page 442

Also sister Mary A. born c1844 according to census 1851

I didn't find a mother named Readhead or variant, but one named Hedley:

RAMSHAW, MARY ANN HEDLEY
GRO Reference: 1843 D Quarter in TYNEMOUTH UNION Volume 25 Page 444

So I looked for the marriage of a woman named Mary Readhead or similar, to a man surnamed Hedley and found this:

First name(s) Mary
Last name Redhead
Sex Female
Marriage year 1836
Marriage date 09 May 1836
Place Newcastle
Description St. John
Spouse first name(s) William<<<<<<
Spouse last name Hedley<<<<<<<
Groom's first name(s) William
Groom's last name Hedley
Groom's parish -
Bride's first name(s) Mary<<<<
Bride's last name Redhead<<<<<<<<
Bride's parish -
County Northumberland
Country England
Record set Northumberland And Durham Marriages
Category Birth, Marriage, Death & Parish Records

I found Mary Hedley with daur Isabella from census 1851(Isabella Hedley Ramshaw) in census 1841, but no sign of her husband:

1841 England, Wales & Scotland Census
Glass House Lane, Wallsend, Tynemouth, Northumberland, England

Mary Hedley Female 29 1812 Northumberland, England
Isabella Hedley Female 4 1837 Northumberland, England
Robert Hedley Male 2 1839 Northumberland, England
Thos Barrett Male 25 1816 Northumberland, England

There is this death for a 30 yr old William Hedley registered in the first qtr of 1841.:

HEDLEY, WILLIAM 30 Order
GRO Reference: 1841 M Quarter in NEWCASTLE UPON LYNE UNION Volume 25 Page 244

EDIT: Found baptism for Eleanor on family search:

Birthplace St. Peter's, Wallsend, Northumberland, England
Father's Name Thomas Ramshaw<<<<<<<<<<<
