Why is it though, that when you watch westerns, which supposedly all depict a relatively short historical period, you can always tell in what decade they were made, despite the fact they are set in the 'same' past?

Style, lighting, realism, actors age.....

It's the same with any film about the past. Cleopatra 1963 just shouts 1960s OTT :-0

A few more tv westerns mostly from the fifties:
Hopalong Cassidy (William Boyd);
Cisco Kid (Duncan Renaldo);
Tales of Wells Fargo (Dale Robertson);
The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp (Hugh O'Brian).

Many were Roy Rogers and Wyatt Erpe with Gabby Hayes in them

I loved the westerns on TV and at the cinema but what
really confused me was how clean and tidy they were after
herding cattle for days.

You can still watch a plethora of the old westerns if you have Sky....try Movies4Men and TCM - we seem to have nothing else on.............. sigh.

Today for instance, you can watch:

Rawhide
Gunslinger 1956
Bad Men of Tombstone 1949
Cow Country 1953
Apache Trail 1942
Sealed Cargo 1951

At the moment though, himself is watching a dvd of Ben Hur. I'm off to finish the ironing. :-D
