Cooking query. My mother does it one way and my future mother in law the other so I was wondering what everyone else does.

When cooking carrots do you salt or sugar them once they begin to boil?

I used to put salt in with the carrots (in cold water).
Now I don't usually cook with salt. The exception being potatoes.

Never tried cooking vegetables with sugar :-S

I would always have added salt if cooking for others though if it's just for me I won't add any. Future mother in law though says they are a sweet vegetable so should be sugared instead.

Roast them you don't need sugar.

That said if boiling you can add some butter, brown sugar or maple syrup and white wine vinegar makes a nice little sauce.....I also add grated root ginger....

I always add sugar to fresh peas when they are coming to an end.

Both and a bit of mint sauce.

Butter and mint sauce heating tinned peas.

Neither. Carrots have enough flavour.

I never add salt to vegetables or shake it over my meal except for a pinch with some vinegar on chip shop chips.

Always add a sprinkle of salt to vegetables but a touch of sugar to soften the cabbage............maybe.......

but I don't add salt to the meal on the plate.........

Neither. Salt is only added at the table, at the person's own (health) risk. Too much salt in the daily diet is as bad as too much sugar.

For a 'formal' meal, ie veggies in serving dishes, I might add a knob of butter,

Nothing added to any veg . I steam all veg and don't use salt at all in cooking or at the table

Used to add salt years ago when they were boiled but that's because how mum did the cooking

Island

Island Report 3 Apr 2017 12:09

I remember times as a child, the dinner would be cooking and mum would suddenly freak out - she'd forgotten to put salt in with the potatoes - you'd think it was the end of the world! :-0 :-S

I never put a salt pot on the table and no-one has ever asked for it so my cooking can't be lacking in flavour.

There's no salt or pepper in our house, when i see peole smother their food with either,..... well, i just do not understand why.

Sharron

Sharron Report 3 Apr 2017 16:27

I evidently have a death wish because I put salt and pepper on my food, and butter sometimes too.

Have seen old and I don't like the look of it but I do like a bit of salt ,pepper and butter.

Caroline

Caroline Report 3 Apr 2017 16:48

I cringe when I see cooking shows call for a pinch of salt...then they put in what I'd say was a years worth. No salt cellar on the table, do put a little in food sometimes.

Cor! I'm 76 and passed me cooks badge in scouts 1954 but never heard of adding sugar to carrots! Some people use it for cauliflower tho - so I understand. I do bulk of cooking but dont add salt nor sugar to any veg. I use electric steamer for veg - consider saucepans very old fashioned for these days. Steamers only need one source of power, dont boil over and take about 30 mins to cook stuff

maggiewinchester Report 3 Apr 2017 23:42

I've never received a badge for cooking :-(

On the plus side - my children survived :-D :-D :-D :-D

I only cook with salt in potatoes - and only put salt on roast potatoes.
Oh - and chips :-D

Caroline

Caroline Report 4 Apr 2017 00:40

OK! Not adding (pun intended) to the debate on salting or sugaring vegetable water as we do neither, but I do remember when cooking with my mother- as an aide, not with her as one of the ingredients- adding bicarb to sprouts as it was supposed to retain their 'green' colour.

I also remember when packets of dried peas came with a tablet of bicarb for use when soaking said peas prior to cooking
