Thank you IGP and Kense. It doesn't sound as bad as I thought.

The original announcement said there would be big improvements and lots of new, exciting Apps, all of which rang alarm bells. I have reached an age where I prefer the things I know rather than having to learn all sorts of new methods.

Incidentally, why does everything new have to be exciting??? Most of it isn't - just dull! :-S :-S

I checked what version I was using and found I had been using V1703 for a couple of weeks.

The only thing I have noticed is that some of the icons of my top sites in Edge have become unreadable. The one for GR General Chat is a. dark mauve with light mauve writing plus a white G.

Currently we have 2 desktops, a laptop and a 2 in 1 tablet in regular use but ironically "Creators" v 1703 has only installed itself on the oldest desktop, an ageing 15 year old Asus with AMD Athlon processor and antique Radeon graphics card.

The other machines are sitting at v 1607, the 2016 "Anniversary Update".

As far as Creators Improvements? Not really noticed any difference but then haven't yet had the opportunity to dig deeper.

Microsoft Windows first retail version was 2.03g which shipped in 1987. Due to a legal dispute it had tiled not overlapping windows. This idea came back with Windows 8.

Windows 3.0 was a major improvement with overlapping windows and hi color if you could afford several hundred pounds for a graphics card. Security was not an issue as it had no way of connecting to the Internet.

A bunch of Isps starting offering Internet addons. These were frequently incompatibe with each other and cost up to £100.

Microsoft then brought out windows 3.1 which was a hit with business with "windows for workgroups" and Msoffice. Home users liked Msoffice too. They still had to improvise for Internet.

Some major software firms said Windows would never replace Dos. They all went bust. Computing like everything else prefers a pretty face.

In 1996 Microsoft shipped Windows95 with built in Internet support. Still no security though.

Ms are shifting to a single software platform for everything. They have zero interest in supporting hold outs. Apple and Google have the same approach. That leaves Linux for those who want to stay in control of their aging computer.

I agree, most of the routine updates are automatic, but this latest Creators Update seems to be voluntary. They keep asking when I would like to install it, with options of "Now", "Choose a date" and "Snooze". Last time it appeared I chose "Snooze" and they left me in peace for a week!! Yesterday I chose "Snooze" again, and shall continue to do so as long as I can! :-)

Has anybody installed the Creators Update? If so, how different is it from the current Windows 10?

3.1 was introduced by Microsoft in 1992 and was their first attempt to move beyond the DOS roots of earlier operating systems.

I remember is caused problems at work as many of our existing pc's were unable to cope, despite meeting the 'minimum requirements' and simply ran out of steam, grinding to a halt if called upon to do more than one task at a time.

The current problem affects mainly hybrid, 2 in one laptops / tablets / notebooks using older Intel Atom (Clover Trail) processors, which were originally passed as ok for W10 when first released, and indeed did support the last major upgrade, the Anniversary Update.

However the latest Creators update won't work. Microsoft and Intel are allegedly working on a solution, which is likely to require an updated version of the driver software on these machines.

One thing many don't like about W10 is that is changed the way in which updates were delivered. Previously you had to make a conscious effort to upgrade to the next version. W10, however, does not allow the selective installation of updates, and all updates (including patches, feature updates, and driver software) are downloaded and installed automatically.

The only way to stop automatic updates is to set your wireless connection to 'metered' This reduces the operating system's background network activity to conserve limits on internet usage, most updates are not downloaded until the device is connected to a non-metered network.

Blasted Win 10 was still in development when it was forced upon new computer purchasers.

The absolute worst edition since I used Win 3.1 when I bought my first Windows PC.

Oh dear 2023 isn't that far away, if you think about it. :-0 I almost did update to windows 10 when I heard my computer would stop working, but I am a risk taker so I took it.

But maybe North Korea will blow us all up and I won't have to think about getting a new computer(s) :-S :-|

Which is strange, as we were 'informed' that if we didn't upgrade to Windows 10, we would lose the use of our computers, or left pinkies - or something like that would befall us :-D :-D

I have refused to get windows 10 even though I have been 'pushed' to get it. I think it depends on windows mood whether they update 8.1 or not. sometimes it takes days and sometimes not.

As often is the case, once you start digging deeper the real facts start to emerge.

Not good news for those who are affected, granted.

The article actually starts "A number of PCs have unexpectedly been blocked from receiving future Windows 10 updates."

....but then.....

Apparently those machines affected are mainly certain types of tablets and convertibles, not conventional desktop pc's

I didn't really want Windows10 because I felt it was too "fancy / frilly" for my needs! so much on it that I do NOT use or want! having used XP for ever I really didn't want to change!

From what I understand, those bought already provided with windows 10 aren't affected.

I have had a look at the link! just wish I understood it!! all that confusing jargon didn't help me at all.
What is Creators?

My PC was purchased about 2yrs ago, an HP pavilion, & came with windows10.
