I had a cold call today - 'number with held' - but have to answer it, as the lady who looks after my cats when I'm away also has 'number with held'.
Indian sounding gentleman calling himself 'James' asked for Mr or Mrs 'X'.
I asked what firm he was calling from.
He then burbled on.

I genuinely couldn't hear him, turned the radio down, and asked him to repeat who he was calling from. He apologised for bothering me, and put the phone down!!! :-S

Okay, I only wanted to know the firm so I could report them (I'm on TPS), but I've never had a cold caller give up so easily :-D :-D

Nos witheld is a nuisance but they are unlikely to say who they are too

I was persistently getting a caller who babbled on about to a survey that I knew was probably going to be a trying to sell call

I googled the tel no to see many others had been getting the same call but I wasn't able to get a name of the company

I tried to fil in the TPS form to report it but they needed the company name

Came to the conclusion it was outside the UK but they were using a forwarding uk tel nos which the TPS can't monitor

After yet another call and telling them where to go in no uncertain terms I didn't get them ringing anymore

Perhaps it was his first day? :-D

Given that there are lots of ways of blocking cold calls, including the newish B.T
service, perhaps for some such calls brighten up a dull day.

Shirley, TPS needing the company name is why I sometimes actually talk to them! :-D

Det, it could have been, hopefully he'll leave and take up less anti-social employment :-D

Rollo, I wouldn't be with BT unless they paid me.
Amazingly, though I don't lead the fantasy life you do, my life isn't so dull.
Before making snarky remarks about a thread, I suggest you try reading what is written.
I give a reason why I answer 'number witheld' calls - but hey why not just ignore it in a feeble attempt to show your alleged 'superiority'. :-D :-D :-D :-D

'James' called me again, just now :-D :-D
He was calling with regard to something about 'Homebase' in Southampton.
'Oh, I said, 'You called yesterday and disturbed me.
I'm on TPS, please take me off your list or Homebase Southampton will be Reported'

See - I can be polite :-D :-D :-D

I haven't been to Homebase in Southampton for years!!

Maggie,

I have a similar problem to the one you mentioned in your opening post.

We don't normally answer withheld numbers, but if we receive one just as OH is setting off to her weekly craft meeting I do answer it as one of the other ladies in the group has a withheld number and she usually phones to ask OH to put in her apologies if she can't make the meeting

Allan, the irony is, the cat lady won't answer the phone - you have to stand there while the message plays then say 'Hi X, it's Maggie' - then she'll pick up the phone :-S
Despite being number withheld - she still gets cold callers!
I've registered her with TPS - but she never tells the cold callers to take her off their list - or else - she just never answers them!

Our withheld numbers go straight to the answering machine, but strangely the vast majority hang up without leaving a message :-D :-D

We get, perhaps one every two months. I usually tell them to stop wasting my time and to go do a 'Baldrick'.....!

I sometimes respond with 'The Banana Bending Factory'. :-D

When the cold callers come on and in a foreign accent tell me their name is George or Elizabeth or something I always say "Why should I buy off you when you've already lied to me--anyhow I don't talk to foreigners in my house--Goodbye"..I don't get quite so many now... :-) :-) LES...
