We had a Heinz factory near North Walsham, just outside Norwich and it closed down a while back. I don't know why but Albert Bartlett, the potato people, are supposed to have taken over the site to make chilled potato products, vowing to use local produce as far as possible.

A more positive outlook than many.

We had Walls sausage’s Clard and bowsers the sweet factory EMI all gone and in the next town up we had Wall Ice Cream and Quacker Oats Walls has gone so that only leaves Quacker Oats but of course there’s the airport that many people work at but the towns are ghost towns. I almost forgot we had Heinz baked beans and that’s gone

We had a Caley's chocolate factory here in Norwich, for years, then it became Rowntree Mackintosh, then Nestlé, and then it went! I still remember the aroma of CaraMac drifting across the city!

...which is why I now buy Green & Blacks...

But I do miss a flake :-(

I well remember my niece visiting us back in1974, and buying a bar of Cadbury's Milk Chocolate Fruit & Nut from a local store.

She almost spat it out, it was so different from what she was used to in England.

By that time, we had been away from the UK for 7 years and no longer noticed any differences.

I have to say that "candies" and chocolate are sweeter in the US than in Canada, and probably sweeter here than in the UK ............ though I no longer buy English favourites so don't know for sure. I can only eat a local chocolate company's dark chocolate covered ginger choccies.

You possibly now have the American version of Cadbury's, and other previous English sweets and chocolates.

It appears to be something similar.
It seems Symingtons no longer make some things :-(

Maggie, you are horrible the way you are teasing me!

I have just been on the Dr Oetka site as well and they don't make it either.

Kraft now owns Cadbury :-|

As well as Aspalls Cyder, another Suffolk brand Copella (fruit juices, mostly apple) has gone to an overseas company. Konings, a Belgian drinks company now own it though, to be fair, they aren't the first foreign company to own it. Pepsico had it for a while but for most of the last 80 odd years it has been a family run concern.

I very rarely buy chocolate but the other day I bought a bar of Cadbury's Dairy Milk. I don't know if my memory of the taste is at fault but it was nothing like it used to be. Very sweet and not so much melt-in-the-mouth as stick-to-your-teeth.

On closer observation - it appears Dr Oetker does something similar - but it's not the same :-( :-(

Sharron Report 7 Jan 2018 18:02

Oh.Maggie, they don't. It is not made any more and it was my favourite.

There used to be a Rowntrees sweet factory not far from here, in recent years
it's been called Nestle.

Also near to Rowntrees was Beechams, it's now Sanofi. All change.

There used to be Thomas Hedley Soap Works, for years its been Proctor & Gamble.

There was Dampneys Paint, it became British Paints, became Berger Chemicals.
The building is now student accomodation

I had to look Symingtons Table Cream up - as I have no idea what it is! :-S

Apparently it's still sold in quite a few supermarkets.

Sharron Report 7 Jan 2018 14:07

Fred and I had a sort of tradition that, if one of us was ill, the other would make them a Symingtons Table Cream and you can't even get that any more.
