Different variations of a surname are due to the census writer - or even the rector - and accents! I've got Cattermoles in my family. We went to Sweffling (where the family came from) and looked in the (photocopied) records kept in the church. Fortunately we worked backwards. The name had about 5 different spellings, from Cattermole, Catermule, Catermulle, back to the 'first' spelling - Kakermoullle! Shears - Sheers, Sheeres, Shires, Shiers. etc

Janey .............
we all find some to many variants of surnames through the ages.
Most of our ancestors were illiterate, so could not read a register or census form to see if it was spelled correctly.
Most census enumerators (those who took down the information) were often only a little more illiterate.
Many vicars could not spell.
Add to this, the hundreds if not thousands of dialects to be found in the UK back then.
Try to say a name in a thick Lancashire accent (for example), and try to decide how it would sound to a "furriner" from Northumberland or Devon!
Like maggie, I have all kinds of spellings in the families I'm researching.
Hayhurst - Hayurst - Hairst ............... then the transcription of that on one census as Porst :-0
The latter was easy to correct, but the others are all found in official records such as Parish Records, military documents, and censuses, and are as thought to be spelled or heard by the person writing down the information.
Who knows what the original spelling was?!!!
It does look as though Edward was Ashmill or Ashmall to begin, and that then transformed into Ashmore.
True or not?

I think Prickles find of the birth of Charles Selwin Ashmore in 1838 nails it for me :-D
I've found burial transcripts for Charles with his middle name spelt as Selwin & Selwyn. I'm now 99% sure that Edward"s wife was Catherine Selwyn.
I agree with everyone about how surname spellings change and have come across similar instances in my own Tree. if you say Ashmore quickly & throw in an accent, I too can see how it may have been written as Ashmall. Chances are both Edward & Catherine were illiterate and therefore wouldn't have any idea if it was written correctly or not!

I agree with the misinterpretation of the name and the accents when being recorded but not sure I agree with Edward being illiterate as he was an optician and optical lens grinder, this seems to be the chosen profession of his male descendants and surely would need to be able to read and write.....just a thought

You may well be right about Edward's literacy. However, I note that his son Edwin whose occupation was an Optician signed the Parish Marriage Register in 1840 with 'a mark'.
