Thanks to a FB friend's post on an advert page, a thread which has turned into a row over the word "Easter" being/or not being on this years crop of chocolate eggs ( which we all know are made by the bunnies in the woods and poured into moulds then transported in wheelbarrows for delivery...ahh those innocent days !) I have been mildly diverted by the public outrage that this 'Christian tradition' is being eroded.

As the standard of comment is mostly along the lines of 'Why aren't they called easter eggs no more?' and 'blame it on PC and not offending minorities' ( this latter is my re-phrasing of some less than pleasant comments) etc. I wonder what the infinitely more literate members of GR think? Will you not buy the particular brand of eggs unless they have "Easter" in big letters on them? :-D

I just don't buy Easter/Chocolate Eggs, I buy my grandchildren book tokens! :-D :-D
They last much longer, and create much more enjoyment. :-D

Edit: I don't buy them from Waterstones - they 'avoid' tax and with their tokens, you can only buy books from them.
I buy generic book tokens.

Fully agree, Florence! :-D :-D

What about Christmas Crackers - 'Winterland Crackers' doesn't sound right. :-(

Florence the thing is, lots of the eggs DO say Easter on them, either on the box or on the egg itself, but it's like chinese whispers one person says it's not on them and others believe it and apportion the blame where it does NOT lie.

No one of any other religion has said anywhere that they are offended, but people on that page have leapt in to assume that is the case ( bolstered by outright lies from the 'usual suspects' of course). It is the company that decides what to put where on the packaging...and given that the eggs have been on shelves sine Dec 31st I'd say calling them 'Easter' eggs is a stretch anyway, given the economy I can't say I blame the companies for wanting to extend the sales period and pull in as much custom ( Christian or otherwise) as possible?

They are 'Easter' eggs to those who celebrate Easter whether it is written large or small or indeed not at all surely? and just 'chocolate eggs' to those of other or no faiths.

Hot Cross buns are still called that on the package, available all year round.

Have to admit to not even looking at the wording Easter eggs - but Easter is when they're eaten, and it's one of our few Bank Holidays, so, if it stops the 'I'm going to blame everyone else' racists, rather than manufacturers, I'd rather the manufacturers put the word 'Easter' on them.

Mind you, if these moaning numbskulls knew where the word 'Easter' probably originated, they'd be complaining about that!! :-S

You can see the ..well I'll use a polite and very generous term...'misinformed' ...coming out of the wood work Maggie, by a quick click on the profiles of those who are apportioning the blame on other religions being "offended" rather than the companies that make the chocolate ...these so called 'Christians' support the pages of BF and their ilk.

I have to say it would never have occurred to me to think that an egg without the word "Easter" on the packaging WAS anything other than an easter egg anyway...does it need a label for people to know that?

Have we ( loosely using the term 'we') as a "Christian country" become so un-aware of that that we need a label explaining 'this egg is a ( pinched from paganism) symbol of Christianity'? really? :-S

I don't care if it has Easter on it or not... but I do only buy the ones that come in minimal and recyclable packaging :-D

:-D :-D :-D :-D

...and those 'misinformed' are about as 'Christian' as my TV remote :-D :-D

I feel sorry for chickens.
Duck eggs are labelled in large letters as 'Duck eggs'.
Quail eggs are labelled in large letters as 'Quail eggs'.
Chicken eggs, are just labelled 'eggs'! - or at best 'Free Range Eggs',
The word 'hen' can sometimes be found in the small print.
Why?
...and this happens EVERY DAY OF THE YEAR!!!! :-D :-D :-D

lolol

Equality for chickens I say :-)

I've just been to look at the box of free range eggs I bought earlier, and not a word about chickens or hens on the box...just a picture of a little blue lion :-S

Well, the National Trust listened to the complaints made last year. Instead of burying Easter amongst the text, they are putting it to the fore eg

Join the Cadbury Easter Egg Hunts
It's almost that time of the year when we team up with Cadbury to offer you the ultimate day out. Join us over the Easter holidays to run through muddy woodlands, around mystical lakes and along nature trails on a Cadbury Easter Egg Hunt 2018.

TBH, on the rare occasions when we buy a chocolate Easter Egg, we're more focused on what's inside. Are they Smarties, M&M's or what ever?

:-D :-D :-D :-D

That strikes me as a bit of extreme genetic engineering.
It must be cheaper to keep chickens to lay eggs, rather than lions :-S

"The bl***dy world is going mad!!"

Well, The bl***dy world is mad!! Apparently I should be offended by a lot of things that I didn't know about. (or care about)

A LITTLE BLUE LION !111!!!!!! :-0

I have to buy my own chocolate eggs and I don't remember having the word Easter on them. Maybe I should be offended? ;-)

I feel sorry for the "children" of same sex couples on Mothers' Day.
If the couple are female one MAY be the biological mother.
If conceived by IVF then the one who gave birth may be a surrogate for the other's egg so the other is biologically related but the birth mother isn't.
Or if adopted then neither are related.
What a tangled web we weave.
It was so much simpler in the old days.

My apologies...for some reason I was colour blind last night ( as I so often am ;-) ) the lion on the egg box is red not blue :-D

Brian a mother is a mother, whether there are two of them, just the one biological or just the one adoptive...it's what you do that counts. <3

Isn't the lion mark to show a symbol of quality and that the eggs are free from salmonella?

Yes I agree rose that the chocolate eggs do hit the shelves straight after xmas and I guess its to increase sales,.the reason the manufacturers can do this is because the eggs have a fairly lengthy expiry date.

It's true the boxes do not have to contain the word "Easter" as we only eat them generally speaking at the Easter bank holiday weekend. But as Maggie said shall we remove the word "xmas" from the boxes of crackers then?

Seeing as most children are taught RE in school and most certainly would be taught about the birth and death of Jesus during either primary or secondary, I personally think only a minority wouldn't know the meaning of Easter or Xmas.

I also think that the people who bring up all these things and want to change things that have been around for eternity, have far too much time on their hands and need to either find a job to occupy their day or do some good volunteering. they wouldn't have so much time to go on FB and other social media to stir up these things and cause arguments.!

Why on earth would you go on social media and ask such questions knowing it will cause an argument?
