You wouldn't lose your tree on here - only a GEDCOM *copy* is downloaded to your device. Attached records or media won't transfer.

Some people have said it gets slightly changed when you up load it to another site. That's something you'd need to check for yourself.

Hi Chris, I copied over about 500 people on my side of the tree as I have done the DNA test, but I wondered if I did the GEDCOM to Ancestry would I lose my tree on here, I have 2 other trees on Ancestry doe different people, & do you know if the GEDCOM is easy to use? My trees are private.
Thanks
Angie

Why not have your trees on both sites? It isn't an either/or situation.

Do you have an Ancestry subscription? If so then adding records will be easy but beware adding info from Public Trees, as given by Sylvia's warning above.

I have my tree here and on Ancestry (Private). I used to get quite a few contacts on here but it is probably well over a year ago since the last one. Ancestry has fared little better......But that could well be that no one is researching my lines :-(

In the old days on here you would get 'Hot Matches' (can't remember the last time I had one!).

Ancestry has an excellent system of sending hints by email, OK not always relevant, but I particularly like their 'Photo Hints' as they shows records/photos added by other members who have the same family members in their tree. Obviously they cannot be taken as actually relevant until they have been researched but I have had a few gems :-D And has led me to make successful contact with other researchers. I assume the facility is only open to paying members of Ancestry but I am sure someone will put me right if I have that wrong.

Following on from Sylvia's warning about Public Trees...

I have an Ancestor who apparently had a few children in the London area, popped over to America to have another who happened to be born at the same time as another in London...In the early 1800s :-( :-D

Good luck with whatever you decide

I have a small tree on Ancestry, which I set up independently of GR, so I can't answer the question of transferring.

All I will say is .................. make your tree on ancestry PRIVATE.

The biggest danger with trees on ancestry that are left Public is that people take any or all information from them and add it to their own tree, whether it fits or not.

For example, the guy who decided that my great aunt and uncle who emigrated from UK to New Jersey in 1902, both born ca 1875-ish, were the parents of his ancestors born in NJ in ca 1830 :-D.

They did have the same names, and were from the same are in the UK, but ..................

If you make your tree Private, a name on there will appear if someone searches for it, but nothing else shows, the holder of the tree has to be contacted by the searcher through the Ancestry system. You can thus screen whether they really are connected, and how much information you will give them.

Private trees are safe, Public trees are not.

Hello, I wonder if any members have transferred their tree over to Ancestry? I am thinking of doing this, but I don't know if it is a safe or wise thing to do.
Thanks
