	They did all come from the same root and it is possible to see them diversify through the 19C censuses.

	Yes, they're different groups of people - but they do intermarry, especially when settled. Even on a New Forest Gypsy site - set up by a Gypsy - they refer to their own people as Gypsies/Travellers. They are also known as Roma /Romani.

	The father of a friend of mine, a showman, died on Boxing Day in the eighties. Her husband was telling me that, because the weather had been so bad, there had been a very poor attendance at the funeral. Barely more than two hundred!

	Gypsy/Traveller funerals tend to be colourful & have large attendance with many coming miles to pay respects to the deceased. A 'good send-off' is the usual thing. On the other hand, 'settled' funerals are frequently miserly attended because few want to 'waste' a day's holiday unnecessarily or, worse still, a day unpaid. A total contrast. When we were being educated at school about 'death' during our RE classes, the teachers often tended to speak in distant terms, focusing on ritual, tradition & even administration after the event. What was not mentioned very much included how it feels to experience the death of a loved one or how to handle the inevitable sadness. Family death is deeply personal.

	One of the papers has said that there will be an enormous funeral costing £100,000 pounds and that it will pass the house. Now, I expect that every gypsy and traveller for miles around will make a point of attending, especially the men. This will mean that there will be only old and disabled people, women and children on their sites. What a marvellous opportunity to give them a taste! Just thinking.
