I suspect it would not make much difference.

What you could suggest to Genes if they contact you about being unable to reproduce the problem is to suggest that they post something on both of the two big threads and that they use an account that has a large number of postings.

Island

Island Report 31 May 2018 17:47

OK. Following Kens suggestion, after deleting my recent link I tried the homepage route. Great! I was in without a problem -until the next time. Error!
Now it is either very slow or I get the error report - I've just had it twice in a row.
So that's blown the route in theory.

I repeat that I do not use any of the long threads neither do others who are getting errors so there seems little point in going on about those being the cause.

I have sent a screen shot to Liam at GR but don't hold out much hope.

Frankly I am fed up with GRs suggestions such as 'clear your cache', try another browser' and today 'make sure you are logging in with a subscription account'
The site is knackered, they don't know how to fix it - or admit that they can't - and they are desperate.

Kense

Kense Report 31 May 2018 18:57

I have managed to get the error message for the first time for months. That was by looking at one of the big threads and trying to select a page range of about 2501-2510. The same thing happened with the other thread but did not happen when I selected a page range for the Corrie thread.

Regardless of what the reason for your errors are Island, it seems that the 60,000 threads are just too large for the system to cope with properly.

If you have ever contributed a post to a thread then it is counted as one of your threads even if you delete the post.

Island

Island Report 31 May 2018 19:24

Ken, you could be right re numbers of threads and posts but suggest GR delete any and some members will be up in arms.

Attempting to access the site from the home page today, I persevered every now and then during the day and, eventually accessed it late afternoon after seeing the error message five times.

AnninGlos Report 1 Jun 2018 10:32

Well that was different. Instead of the error message I got 'Gateway timed out' and a blank screen. So couldn't try and get on via the logo and homepage. :-D

SheilaSomerset Report 1 Jun 2018 10:38

I've never been timed out but it is normally quite slow to load. Using Edge with whatever is the latest version (updated recently). Our broadband normally very reliable and this is the only site I've had problems with :-(

PatinCyprus

PatinCyprus Report 1 Jun 2018 10:51

The boards are very slow today.

To get on a large thread I check how many pages are on and split it up

e.g 250 pages ask for page 250 - times out so I now

1st ask for page 80 - arrives quite quickly
2nd ask page 180 - arrives quite quickly
3rd ask page 250 - arrives quite quickly

This takes less time than trying to get on page 250 straight away.

Today even new threads are very slow. :-| new members will soon leave this site as they will get so frustrated with it. :-S

Island Report 1 Jun 2018 13:03

New members Pat? I haven't seen any on the community boards for a few years :-0

New members who don't use the boards might not be getting error reports.

I'm going with Ken on this and think GR should suspend the boards for a while - or delete ten years of old threads - to see if it makes a difference. Of course they may not have the ability to do this.
There's always FB which most members seem to be hooked up on. Form a group page and chat there?

Island Report 1 Jun 2018 13:44

Fuming now! :-|

Yesterday 'Liam' (not had that name before) asked me to send a screenshot of the error message. 'That's different to the usual unhelpful suggestions' I thought. I didn't have to wait long to capture an error message and duly forwarded it

Today I got a response from 'Karen' (I'm beginning to loathe 'Karen') regarding the screenshot. She made no reference to it but instead suggested, yet again, not only that I clear my cache but included a link on how to do it!
I am bored with 'Can't be arsed Karen'. She reminds me of David Walliams 'computer says no' character.
I have suggested they delete half of the old threads or temporarily suspend the heavily used boards.
Actually they could get rid of the 'Suggestions' board.

My sub is due on the 13th and although it's only 8.96 I'm seriously wondering whether I want to contribute to keeping this site going - I could buy a tube of pain for that :-D

AnninGlos Report 1 Jun 2018 13:57

Strange, I had an e mail from Liam with what I thought was a helpful suggestion, and after I had replied had a reply from Karen and somebody else I didn't recognise, back to the old steryotyped replied of clear cache etc. Maybe the techies only work one morning a week or something.

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 1 Jun 2018 17:11

I have this feeling that GR doesn't have any permanent staff, just FMP staff who are assigned 1 or 2 days a week or maybe "when you have time"

After all, responses to emails will be "within 3-5 business days" is not exactly member friendly!

I've had responses in the past couple of years from Karen and Liam, and one other in the past.

But, honestly, I can't be bothered to contact them when I just get the same old same old replies back!

Island

Island Report 3 Jun 2018 10:30

Same day response here.

"Thank you for your e mail.

We are not a technical helpdesk here we are customer support.

The error message you are seeing is a caching issue, clearing it should fix it.

Maybe try using a different internet browser to see if that fixes it.

We also do not recommend accessing the site from a bookmark or favourite.

We have the ability to access your account from here and when on the same page as you do not get the same message I am afraid. That's why we think it is something local hence the clearing cache and different browser options.

We cannot send screenshots here or I would just so you can see everything is fine in your account.

I am using Google chrome and have no issue with it.

Please can you try and let me know what happens, I am trying to help you as much as I possible can."

Island

Island Report 3 Jun 2018 10:35

Surprise surprise, I got the error message as I was posting the above.

As I have no error issues or timeouts with other websites, I have come to the conclusion that the help being offered is how to access a site (GR) which is flawed beyond redemption.

:-\

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 3 Jun 2018 17:28

What I find very strange is that, as so often in the past ........ this is a "local issue"

I am in Canada

Island, Ann, Ken, etc are in England, VERY different pars of England at that

Pat is in Cyprus

Allan in Australia

We are all using different search engines and internet providers

"Local issue" my eye!

As to not accessing from Bookmarks or Favourites .............. some weeks ago, after 3 attempts to open the site from Bookmarks, I Googled GR and clicked on the site from their official entry

Guess what???

ERROR

Never did get until later that day

I've since tried the same route ........... and get Error every time.

SuffolkVera

SuffolkVera Report 3 Jun 2018 17:51

It is odd the way some people struggle to get on and others have no problems. I have never been timed out and over several years have only had the error message a couple of times, but I don't have large numbers of posts.

I go in to the home page via bookmarks and move easily between boards etc. I know a lot of people never log out and I always do but I can't see why that would make much difference.

I'm just thankful that I don't have to put up with the frustration that a lot of you are getting.

Shirley~I,m getting the hang of it

Shirley~I,m getting the hang of it Report 3 Jun 2018 17:52

Get it umpteen times a day whether I am on my iPad or the old pc

I even get it just trying to open a thread not just trying to switch boards

Indeed I had it this time just switching from find ancestors to general board

Don't get it if the error has been lodged and wil, be investigated then why don't they know what the problem is

Joy

Joy Report 3 Jun 2018 18:16

It is, Island, a site which is flawed beyond redemption.and not fit for its purpose, sadly.

Joy

Joy Report 3 Jun 2018 18:44

No error experienced with any other site.
Three times here just now:
Error
Sorry. An error has occurred
The page you were trying to load has experienced an error. This error has been logged and will be investigated.

If you hit the back button on your browser, it will return you to the page you were on, and you may like to try the action again. If you repeatedly experience the same error, please contact Customer Support.

If you were following a link from your favourites, an email or from another site, the link may have changed. We recommend returning to the home page of the Genes Reunited site, and following the existing menu options to navigate to the same content.

To return to the home page, click on the Genes Reunited logo.

Regarding Island's post @ 10.30.

"We have the ability to access your account from here and when on the same page as you do not get the same message I am afraid. That's why we think it is something local hence the clearing cache and different browser options"

A few years ago I had a very similar problem trying to log onto my Superannuation site. The site would just not accept my name and password.

After umpteen complaints, which all received the same response...sorry, the problem can't be replicated. We have no problems in accessing your account at this end.

It wasn't until some bright spark decided to use a computer NOT connected to the main system i.e. a personal laptop that suddenly the same result that I was experiencing was replicated.

I wonder if anyone at Genes has though of doing something similar?

For what it's worth, I cleaned out my cache today and logged on from a different browser, same problem :-|

Absolutely no problem getting onto the site (there never has been for me) but trying to post something times out and the good old error message pops up :-| :-|
