Hi,
I have the death certificate of my great-grandfather who died in 1915 of Phthisis Pneumonia and Cardiac failure, which indicates he died of TB. Not sure what his trade a Paperhangar master is , I only know he was a dockworker. It says he lived at Horrath street, possibly Howard(Great) street ?

A Master Paperhanger would be what we would call a decorator (hanging wallpaper) who probably employed someone.

Great Howard Street is still in existence in Liverpool but I can't find a Horrath Street on the map.

When was your great grandfather born? Have you found him in the census?

It could be a number of streets, Paul. Howarth, Horran etc.

Is there a district (eg Toxteth etc) or number on the DC - such as L6 or L2 ?

Where was he living in 1911?

There is a possible burial for John Lyons on 14 Feb 1915 at Ford Roman Catholic Cemetery in Liverpool it gives his address as

6 Howarth (possibly Haworth) Street

Age 38
Grave 1020

Could this be your man?

6 Howarth Street is still in existence. You can see it on Streetview.

Paul, have you looked at the 1911 Census?

I have had a quick glance and there are several people named John Lyons so it would help to know his parents' names, wife's name, children's' names.

There is a John Lyons, 22, married, Paper Seller/news vendor living in one of the courts off Horatio Street (say it quickly).

The courts weren't the healthiest of places - even worse in the early-1800s.

The parents of that particular John are James and Catherine.

Hi Paul, you say that you only know that your John Lyons was a Dockworker however the Death Certificate that you have states that that John Lyons was a Paperhanger Master, are you sure you have the right Death Certificate?

JOhn Lyons with parents James and Catherine in Horatio Street.

James, the father is a Dock Labourer in 1911 so if, as John got older, he needed more money to get married and keep a family, he may well have found working on the docks more lucrative. His father would have found him work there because they were a pretty tight bunch.

You have not said how old John was on his Death Certificate.

Have you looked in any of the directories at all (eg Gore's)?
