I did try washing soda in my bath but it is very drying and, strangely, gave me sore shins!

My mother, who you must remember, was mad, would always buy bath cubes when she went shopping, which may have been logical had there been a bath in our house!

Hmmm! gets in all the crooks and nannies......

Thinking back to when I was young, we always had a tub of 'bath salts' in the bathroom and a small handful was thrown into a bath of water before someone had a dip.
Was this just coloured and perfumed soda too?

Glad you are enjoying using the washing soda, Sharron, don't make the bath too clean and shiny, or you might slip like o.h. did the other week, and cause a tsunami!

Today, I had my bath this morning with a scouring sponge to have a go at the stubborn bits. Did some on the bath too!

There is some soda I mixed to a paste with a drop of water on the bits I couldn't soak the other day.

Good to have a bath that doesn't look like a horse trough.

Soda is great if you have got a build up of fat in the pipes

Oh don't envy you that job Sharron, well done!!

Soda is good for putting through an empty washing machine once in awhile to clean all the pipes apparently... so many uses.

Thank you everybody. I only mentioned the loss of plot in passing, because I thought you all knew, and to explain why my bath looked like a cattle trough.

Really, I just posted to explain how effective washing soda had been, and cheap!

Cillit Bang is fine on enamelled baths but could take the the plating of the stainless steel plug hole.
Cif is a mild abrasive, so it depends how ‘precious’ you feel about scratches.

What ever you decide to do, you’ve reason to be proud of your efforts. You’ve made quite some journey. :-)

I have always thought it would be pretty harsh and the soda has 'brought it up a treat'.

Have to get my head round doing the other bits now.

Soda is brilliant to use for cleaning. For tough stains in my shower or bath, I get small sponge with CIF(theoriginal yellow not spray one) and it does the job.


There is nothing more satisfying to the mind to see the results of hard labour. whenever I have emptied a whole cupboard o several drawers, cleaned and thrown away rubbish, it pleases me to see it all clean and tidy afterwards...a job done well.

Have to say I don't like the smell of cillitbang and its pricey!

best not to use cillit bang on plastic baths. a bathroom fitter had 40 fits when I offered him some to clean up with after he had fitted our new bathroom a few years ago . - :-0

I did lose the plot David.

It has taken a long time to get out of it because I decided to let it happen and to not use medication. The doctor was aware of my decision.

Over the last few years I have spent untold hours in that bath, often sleeping for several hours. Apart from that, I knitted dishcloths, unorthodox I know, but it was soothing and mindless and it did the job.

I am feeling strong enough now to get to grips with some of the mess that has accrued in the meantime.

I have heard Cillit Bang is good too but washing soda is a pound a kilo and cleans just about everything and what soda doesn't clean, vinegar probably does.

My parsimony was never affected ny my plot loss!

I don't think you've lost the plot Sharron, your threads are interesting and often

informative. Cillit Bang is supposed to be good (?)

I think I might have to use a scouring sponge on some of the tough bits but I do have some old toothbrushes for the taps.
