Took me back there, Pat, to around 1984/5 when we first had computers at work.

The mainframe was huge, in a specially conditioned room behind a glass wall which also had a door to enter.

You were allowed to enter the room but not to enter the 'inner glass sanctum' and had to try to attract the Comp Manager's eye if you wanted to ask anything.

How things change! :-D

I know. He worked at the museum in 1975/76 when an electronics technician, building and checking the computers. They had to work out all the words children (and some adults) shouldn't put in the computers as they were on public display. They hid all the words behind a code which unfortunately wasn't very long - you guessed it some lad hit the code and all those words appeared. :-D :-D :-D

A much longer code was decided on :-D :-D :-D :-D

He went on a course in April 1981 to convert to the main tracking computer in the RAF.

It was great to be able to contact places thousands of miles away immediately without having to write everything down that was said on the phone.

Gosh, a lot has happened over the last few decades as far as internet etc is concerned.

I got my own computer around 1990, bought when a certain body upgraded. Could make phone calls from it too but, eventually, I succumbed to even newer technology around 1997 and that was even better.

Memory lane of computers! :-D

Off to do washing up then a bedroom needs sorting :-(
