but you've been saying no-one posts!!!

Threads where everyone agrees are very boring, and drive people away!!

Discussion is the name of the game, and democracy where everyone is allowed, indeed encouraged, to contribute their views, pro or con, is to be encouraged!

Hi Barbara,

In answer to your OP, you have only to read through this thread to see why.

A good example of being so petty and ridiculous to get ones knickers in a twist over a harmless post.

Its doing nothing to encourage other people to post. In my opinion, the exact opposite.

Hence the misunderstanding! Say "I'm off to bed" or log off & disappear.

Most people take the phrase 'Put it to bed' to mean 'it's complete, no more attention/work needs to be done'. :-)

Barbra

Barbra Report 20 Oct 2018 11:31

Well there you go meant it was bed time will not be deleting the post Barbara :-D

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 20 Oct 2018 03:31

Barbra .....

you can't "put it to bed", if by that you mean closing the thread!

Just can't be done on GR!!

If you don't want any more comments, you have to delete the thread, it cannot be closed.

Jem,

yes you did annoy me just a little.

You seem to often provide advice without thinking that the person might know all about it, especially someone like myself who has been a member since early 2004!

In any case, your test with your friend does not prove anything.

Maybe I did not make my post clear enough, but this was NOT a case of someone sending a pm to or me sending a pm to them.

This was a case where there had been some gradually more and more acrimonious posts and responses on threads on the Boards, followed by pms to me from that other member. I stopped responding to him, and he emailed GR to complain and to get them to make me provide the information that he wanted (while I had already proved to my own satisfaction that he was not connected to my tree).

GR then emailed him back ............... and it was in that email that they revealed my surname to him.

He was gloating about what he'd done, so pm'd me and c&p'd the GR email so that I could see what they said.

That's how I found out!

It was not a case of pms between 2 people but an email FROM GR to another member that released my birth surname.

I seem to have upset you Sylvia. I'm sorry about that! :-)

I have no idea what happens when you correspond with GR over problems with members/ boards etc as I have never had reason to do that (as yet)

I can confirm though, that when you send PMs to other members (in my experience anyway) if you have selected the "Board Name" option that is what happens. I know this as I have just asked a GR friend to check my PMs :-)

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 19 Oct 2018 20:32

Jemima

I did that over 15 years ago!!

I just did not realise that GR released whatever you had put as your BIRTH SURNAME when they replied to someone else who had pm'd them about something that you had done or not done. I assumed that was just for their own records.

In this case, someone complained that I would not open my tree to them or give them the information they wanted (which I didn't have!!).

He pm'd me gloating about what he had done, and enclosed a copy of the pm that GR had sent to him ........ with a birth surname in full.

Did you know they did that?????

and yes, I did have "Use Board Name when sending messages" ticked!

I'm not an idiot when using this site, you know!!!

JemimaFawr

JemimaFawr Report 19 Oct 2018 18:42

Sylvia....

If you click on "Account" and go into your Personal Details you can chose whether or not you want your registered name or your Board Name when communicating through PMs

Copied and Pasted

Message board name
JemimaFawr
Use board name when sending messages?
Yes

A drop down bar gives you the option of Yes or No

It might not have always been that way, but certainly since I started posting in 2012

Re the apparent reason for this thread was that the Boards are slow moving.

Of course it is, so many people are not renewing!! Plus, I often don't post on here if I don't find any thread or topic too interesting. I guess others do the same thing!

And, I think many of us have other interests as well, both on the internet and in real life.

There is still some activity on the genealogy boards.

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 19 Oct 2018 17:47

Nor did I understand exactly what happened ...........

I at first read it as someone had published Barbra's information on these open Boards .............. which is a no-no. If she had contacted GR, that post would have been removed.

If the names were put on their Tree, which after all is not visible to all and sundry, but only after that tree owner has agreed to open their tree ............ then contacting GR would again correct the information.

FWIW .............. until several years, GR would include any name under which you registered with them as your Birth Surname when communicating to another member. By that I mean, they would use your registered surname NOT your Board Name.

I discovered that when another member and I had been having some sort of disagreement, and he pm'd me directly sending me the text of the pm GR had sent him showing my maiden name.

I complained bitterly to GR, with the result that he was banned from any further contact with me. (We have since come to an agreement and have communicated.)

BUT what GR told me was that any name you used as your Birth Surname on your your account/profile would be used in any correspondence from GR, including pms to other members.

Hence my birth surname with GR is officially "In Canada" :-D

In lieu of watching 'Strictly', I've decided to re-read 'The Rime of the Ancient Mariner'. Powerful words!

PS: What's wrong with the following newspaper headline? - 'Ant & ex-Wife Granted Divorce'. :-S
