At times I have been known to be childish and stupid, waffling on too much and of being too serious. I am guilty of all three.

All facets of a sometimes-riotous imagination, I claim, and all parts of the rich smorgasbord of life. :-D

Can some please point me in the direction of silly childish comments thank you :-D

Of course Babs nowt wrong with keeping your own council as long as you accept that others will keep theirs ;-)

Dermot, the book to which you refer is hilarious. BUT..it is written tongue in cheek, by an author who loves the French. As do I. If I could afford it I would buy a holiday home there.

My two languages... English and Rubbish

maggiewinchester

maggiewinchester Report 29 Dec 2018 19:32

Rollo, I think you'll find the nobility of Britain spoke mainly their own languages, with Anglo-Norman as a second language.
Anglo-Norman isn't the same as Continental or Parisian French, and French never became the official language of England.
Most areas of Britain had their own form of language - many of these languages had a Celtic base.
My own ancestors spoke Kernewek (Cornish) and Breton, as they had close links, and the languages were very similar - but NOT the same, and Breton isn't French, just like Kernewek isn't Welsh, though the Cornish language is a Celtic language of the Brythonic branch, as are the Welsh and Breton languages.

Breton was the language of the upper classes of France until the 12th Century
Literature was generally in Latin, and Jewish, and Kernewek in Cornwall.

Rollo, stop generalising!

FGS, we all know there are good and bad in every country.

Why would you think you could be banned - unless someone has reported you? Personally, I quite like it when you stick your two-pennorth in as it sometimes livens up a discussion.

Not sure whether you are associating marmalade with being British, referring to a cat or ????? The reference is a bit obscure to me.

Please explain!

Caroline Report 29 Dec 2018 18:15

To be fair Dermot wrote on this thread but didn't actually comment on it....just to split hairs :-)

I call myself British by the way as one parent Scottish one Welsh and I was born in England.

As for being permanently banned why Rollo surely you wouldn't be the RR.....and am I the only one not getting the marmalade comment??

The weak grasp of the English on their own history is sad and dangerous, for the English, quite funny for everybody else.

RolloTheRed

RolloTheRed Report 29 Dec 2018 17:29

Dermot posted how pleased he was with his prezzie of 1001 ways to annoy the French. The most annoying thing about the French is that they simply don't care.

For those that find nothing here to amuse or inform you are likely to have the same problem elsewhere without the uncertain protection of the RR. Simple answer start a thread of your own.

Enjoy my posts while you may. GR has threatened me with a permanent ban. Possibly something to do with marmalade.

Happy new year. Praise God and pass the ammunition.

I think Rollo is the lost one, Shirley :-S
He appears to be replying to Dermot - who hasn't commented on this thread - neither does Dermot have any threads up about Victorians or whatever.....

Magpie - that's your choice :-D

Of course, you could always start your own 'interesting', 'unpredictable' threads, it's not the 'job' of anyone else to start threads. :-D

I do find it strange how people complain about the 'slow boards', boring threads etc - yet do nothing about it! :-S

Do these people also sit on their backsides watching someone else cook, eat the food - and then complain that they could do better?

I think a lot of these threads are way beyond their sell by date! and have just become predictable and boring! which is one of the reasons why I won't be renewing my sub!!

The "British" Dermot were invented by mid C19 Victorians who needed to jusitfy the shedding of Scots blood in futile wars such as Crimea while stealing their land in order to have more space for grouse shooting. The only people in Ireland who call themselves British love the sash their fathers wore. Although Scottish they refer to the majority as Fenians at best or T----s for preference.

Some 70 years after Dunkirk those born south of Hawick and east of Chepstow are rather more likely to call themselves English than "British" a fictional nation ony found in such places as Cherry Tree Close and Mornington Crescent.

The Scots and the French own a mutual love society known as "the auld alliance" the principal aim of which was and is to annoy the English. Pres. Macron and PM Sturgeon are experts..

DNA studies show that over 25% of the population of southern England and the Fens has French antecedents. A quick browse through the Canterbury & East Kent phone books confirms this.

The several humdred French matelots who fought under Nelson at Trafalgar tend to be forgotten but for sure it did annoy the French.

Nobody in the English ruling class spoke anything other than French and Latin until about 1250 as they were mostly French.

The things that really annoy the French about les Rosbifs are rarely mentioned in polite society but fwiw it's worth No.1 is banging on about Azincourt.

no.2 is rudeness, exemplified by Theresa May and her crew. If and when brexit comes to pass the lack of something that costs nothing will be extremely expensive.
