Have any of you heard of a killer disease in South America in the late 1800s that sounds anything like TORMANDIAS SICKNESS?

Google doesn't recognise it. It was probably spelled wrongly.

It's probably way off. It's from my 3x Great Uncle Sea Captain's memoirs. He was first language Welsh and couldn't spell English
