We are still using a lot of our wedding gifts, and it will be 52 years in August .............

m-i-l gave us a full 12 piece dinner service, Royal Doulton. We've used it constantly since we married, never had another service. Many of the pieces are still in almost perfect condition though some of the diner plates have lost their central pattern.

f-i-l gave us money to but some furniture for one room. We didn't actually use that money until 18 months later, but we still sleep in the bed, and use the drawer units, coffee table and standard lamp that we manage to buy judiciously from a Danish teak shop here.

Several people gave us sets of glasses, usually 6, for various drinks (sherry, port, etc), none of the sets match .............. but we still use them, as well as the 5 drinking glasses left from the water set (jug and 6 glasses) that my class gave me when I left to get married. Those glasses are used almost daily.

Someone gave us a lovely set of circular place mats ...... still in use!


I think that's what comes of being raised by parents who went through WW1, the Depression, and WW2 ........... keep on using if it still looks good!!

I still use a set of kitchen knives (paring to carving) that I bought over a period of about a year beginning in 1963.

I am still using towels bought for us 44 years ago :-D :-D

Guinevere, I have gone about as far as I'm going with my tree, and don't have one on here now. But have been looking in to reply to messages from time to time. :-)

I'm an infrequent visitor these days. No new tree contacts for ages.

There's a couple of others I can try, but this one was a direct line so I hope he may yet respond.

I am still using some of our wedding gifts as we had lived together for years and have been married 23yrs ( babies to some of you ) :-D



My daughters wedding is costing more than we paid for our house :-0

OH's mother and father amrried in 1936, in the middle of the Depression. Most of their relatives could not get to the wedding, so they posted presents.

M-i-l used to say she got 34 tablecloths.

Most were not used, and a lot were later given away to future brides, especially during WW2 and just after as good linens were hard to buy.

Many moons ago I bought a set of pillow cases for a friend's wedding, she told me later it was the only bedding they had, but lots of gadgets I think.

Most recent wedding list was easy to choose from, as the couple had been together for a long while they had all the necessities so a little money towards the honeymoon was welcomed.

Thanks for all the interesting replies. I must ask my brother if he still has the fondue set and if they use it.

We had two toasters, and three stainless steel toast racks.

One uncle who had 'contacts' in the trade asked us to pick a canteen of cutlery. We picked a 'trendy' set by Viners. He bought us his choice! Still in its wooden case, used only once.

We also had a set of plain cotton sheets and pillow cases with the word 'Seconds' stamped proudly on them. :-P

Lots of orange and brown, as that was all the rage...………….then! :-D :-D

It isn't even dark wood Det, it is quite rough type wood although there is some polish on the top.

Ann, it might be worth having it valued for auction. Although dark wood furniture is out of favour, there is an interest in bone handled cutlery.

You asked about things never used Rose. We had the jam dish and spoon (still got it somewhere) pretty sure it has never been used.

Re the cutlery set. We have in our lounge a tallish table about 3 foot by two foot (maybe a few inches larger, it has a shelf underneath. The top lifts up (It is not a very pretty piece of furniture, very solid 30s. Inside is a complete cutlery set (bone handled). It was a wedding present to my mother's sister in the early 30s, given to me by my mum when my aunt died. goodness knows why, we have never used the cutlery and I don't think it has ever been used. There is even a carving knife and fork and a knife rest in there. We only keep it because we have not got a clue what to do with it. :-(

My parents married in 1928, working class and also had a lovely coffee set, Japanese-looking although the scene on the coffee pot was more reminiscent of the Saharan desert. It was gorgeous. I left it in England when I married and moved over here, but my brother did take it after Dad died.

His eldest daughter married a friend of ours and moved here, and brought that set with her. Unfortunately I have no idea where it is now .............. niece died of cancer about 6 years ago, her daughter was unable to go into mother's condo and clear it out. Daughter also didn't pay the condo fees, so they took it back, and I fear everything in there either went to the dump or the Sally Ann thrift store :-(

How I regret not asking for that set after Dad died!

I often wondered if it was part of the Art Deco/1920s scene because Mum & Dad had several other things that you wouldn't expect in an ordinary working-class house .......... for example, two table lamps that each had an Art Deco dancing lady as the stand, an incense burner that looked rather Indian

Married in 1984 and had a typical gift list for the time.

I am still using the gardening hand tools, beautiful Coalport china set of white serving bowls, some lovely crystal glasses and a solid wood butcher's block.

The fondue set, Le Crueset, was used in the '80s but has resided in the garage since the '90s.

Husband became the ex in the '90s so it is some 'perverse' satisfaction that the wedding presents lasted longer than him :-D ;-)

We married in 1973 and got lots of stainless steel tableware, some of which we used. When the children were very young and we had little money, I shared a stall at a flea market and sold most of it, especially the cake stand which had never been used. Some of our wedding presents are still in use, even guest towels which don't get overused.

A friend who married in the 60's was given 12 tablecloths, and none of them fitted her table.

Amokavid I hope you hung onto those twenty pound notes as they could be priceless - they were out of circulation from 1943 until 1970!
