Pat, Sorry for that, dating sites have no interest for me either, anyway its all too common for these sites to grab your details, for further use.......It was just a general possibilty....curiosity and all that?.Bob

Guys Just a thought ok lets look at this problem 1/ Emails arriving with your GR user name in the subject box to your private email addy How could this happen 1/ have you all downloaded the same bit of malware thats collecting GR user names, (lets say you have) great it has your user name, but it cant know your email addy, so thats out 2/ you have all clicked on a add from this site thats pretending to be something its not, and filled in a form using your GR user name and given it your email addy, No dont thnk so 3/ None of you have any anti-virus, anti-spywear protection and you all downloaded a new virus that raids GR for user names and email addys. Nope dont think so 4/ GRs database has been breached by a brilliant hacker just to take your user name and email addy so you can be spammed by a dating company, nope errrrrrrrrr coz he/she would want you card details 5/ someone with access to GRs database is selling details on to a third party well thats a possable thought. but if that was the case they would be selling your real name and email addy. 6/ last one GRs servers have a virus/worm that is reading user account pages on your home page hence the use of user names going to private email addys, that sound a bit more realistic If anyone can think of other ways for this to happen please add lol Sxx

Well, Steve, as you put it...No 6 seems the more likely. In future I shall just put my fears to you instead of GR. At least I know I shall be treated with respect and receive a reply! lol

flirticious steve, oo i love a quiz, seriously though 1 - no 2 - no 3 - no 4 - no 5 suppose you are right 6 we'll see maybe a good idea is to sign out (LHS)rather than click the x, (RHS), if you are doing something else online. i haven't received a reply yet. bit hard with the time differences, but maybe - what time did you receive your queer mail? mine came 5.08 pm Aust, so thats about 7pm UK regards Yvette

Joy Report 25 Oct 2006 12:38

Mwah ! to Steve ... :-) ..................................... There again, I think that lots of people send 'round robin' emails without deleting other people's email addresses - that could be a way of it happening? If I do that kind of email I always delete email addresses.

Joy

Joy Report 25 Oct 2006 12:44

True - but people sending the 'round robin' type emails could be subscribed to GR, too, and know the board user names ? I have not (yet) had one of the odd emails .... perhaps I shall after having typed this! **thinks - wonder just which board name would be used!!!**

AnninGlos Report 25 Oct 2006 13:46

This is the one I have had from GR. I had not had any e mails but wrote to express my worries over security of e mail addreses. Thanks for your email Ann, I have discussed this with my manager, who has assured me that we do not give out email addresses to a third party. If you do receive an email that you think is spam, please send me the whole email, including the header of it so that we can look into this. Ann Glos

I've just had this message from GR regarding the SPAM emails Thanks for your email I can confirm that Genes Reunited do not divulge email addresses to anyone. Please send us a copy of this email. Best regards, Rachel The Genes Support Team Will send a copy to them when I get home - if its still there. Although I think I probably 'trashed' it Barbara

Unknown Report 25 Oct 2006 13:55

Just another thought lol If any of you have had them sent to a Y4hoo email account even after you delete it it then goes into your TRASH folder so you could prolly rescue it amd move it back into your inbox then forward it to GR Sxx Hello Pat hope your well xx

Janet 693215 Report 25 Oct 2006 14:20

The only scenario I can add is that someone has stored your e-mail addys in their address book together with your board names (so they know who you are) They have then been infected by a worm which has gathered the details and then sent the spam. The spam will be from made up e-mail addys but if your lucky the senders ISP will be correct in the header. This can then be blocked and the originator tracked. If you do have the originating ISP pop it in to http://www.ripe.net/whois Perhaps they will all originate from the same server. I don't really understand this but I had a frantic 2 weeks where my inbox was filled with (thankfully) detected viruses daily. I think the originating worm host turned out to be a county council.

AnninGlos Report 25 Oct 2006 16:33

to put your mind at rest I opened an e mail from GR support today and there are no viruses, worms or otherwise in my Virus vault. Ann Glos
