Although we don't do it so much now, we always used to have cold meats (ham, pheasant etc) and pickles (onions, red cabbage) for Christmas Day breakfast. I've no idea where the tradition came from, and never met anyone else who does it. I often wondered whether it was a Norfolk thing, but when my step-father first met my mother he'd never heard of such a thing. Does anyone else do it ?

Hehe - 'Wallys' - someone's remembered the sandwich thread ! That's interesting Brenda - perhaps it is a Norfolk thing. I remember that I always used to look forward to Christmas Day breakfast nearly as much as the lunch.

A random reference to Wallys - I like it ! : ) (There was a thread a while back on peoples' favourite sandwich in which I mentioned Wallys, with an implied challenge for people to admit whether they knew I was talking about gherkins).

Pork pie for us (actually, it's a pound of pork sausage meat, a couple of sliced chicken breasts and a pound of Cumberland sausage this year). I just took it out of the oven half an hour ago.

Sounds like our Boxing Day grub - cold meat, mash & pickles - yummy! Xmas breakfast is normally a glass of Bucks Fizz or OJ if driving and a biccy or six, from the jumbo tin of Xmas biccies. And a few Quality Street. Dates. Nuts. Then it's time for Xmas lunch. And Xmas drinkies. Then After Eights. Saz

I usually start christmas day with a cup of tea and a couple of slices of toast. I can't imagine getting up and eating pickles. Jack x

No. I imagine it was because it didn't involve any cooking as there was plenty to be going on with the lunch. When I was a child we had grapefruit for breakfast as it was prepared the night before and we wanted something we could eat quickly as we weren't allowed to open any presents until breakfast was over. When my bro & I grew up we also had champagne for elevenses and opened our presents then. Boxing day we have a brunch of bubble & squeak leftover veg & meat from the Xmas lunch. nell

We usually cook our meat /fowl for Xmas day on Xmas Eve. Which means that on Xmas morning there is plenty of turkey and/or beef dripping to slather on hot buttered toast, liberally sprinkled with black pepper, and eaten with lashings of steaming tea or coffee! Nom, nom, nom.........
And, if we're lucky, some for Boxing Day breakfast, too!
