Added 20/2/08:
The trust needs a final £150,000 to get plane into the 2008 airshow circuit.
Please visit the Vulcantothesky website for details and tell your husbands, friends, boyfriends and the milkman to keep this going.

Original message:
Probably of little interest to the ladies, but the Vulcan to the Sky Trust has got its aircraft airborne this morning after years of work and fundraising.

Last having flown 14 years ago when it was "scrapped" by the RAF, this only airworthy example of this type is now seeking sponsors and should be able to appear in airshows next year.

Used in the Falklands War to bomb Stanley airfield, to the great consternation of the Argentinians who thought they were out of bombing range, I have seen one once at a display and it is a breathtaking sight.

We were watching about it on the news this morning, that particular one was located at East Midlands airport some years ago, my boys have happy memories of it.

Is that the one with big delta wings?

MrDaff

MrDaff Report 18 Oct 2007 13:58

We used to have them fly regularly overhead when we were stationed in Cyprus, 34 years ago.

They hold a couple of particular memories for us, and my younger son was so captivated by it, he was drawn into the aerospace industry as a career. They were like something out of the future when they they flew over.

Sam:
Yes, it is the big delta.
Amazing sight at low speed, as the speed drops the nose comes up just like Concorde (also delta) until it seems to be at a 45 degree angle almost sitting on its tail.

I was disappointed it didn't seem to make the national news at 6 pm, but there was some good coverage on East Midlands Today at 6.30. (Some pictures on the BBC website.)

The people who have put so much into the refurbishment should be congratulated. They have worked extremely hard to get the Vulcan back in the air.

It's not just a man thing!

She was a beauty,
on sundays durring the summer, they flew the battle of britain memorial flight over our heads, Glorious days, and a wonderful sight

hubby had heard that it was only going to be at 3 airshows this year , Duxford, Waddington and Fairford. Guess who's going to Fairford again this year? I can't wait to see it up in the air again. The sound that it makes is so distinctive. I was lucky enough to see it several times at the Halfpenny Green airshows during the 70's.

This is something that does interest some of us ladies, you only have to go to any airshow and look at the Vulcan to the sky stand and see the amount of ladies who are interested.
This year will be our 3rd visit to Fairford and it's an absolutely fantastic event to see, The 1st year we only went for the Sunday and were dissapointed that we didn't see everything. So last year we went for both days and camped on the campsite that is on the hill, behind the hangers and had a wonderful time. This year our 2 daughters are coming with us (they are 24 and 20) and can't wait to see the displays.

I worked on the Vulcan, early 80's, also the Hunter & Jet Provost, mid 80's it was the hawk, single/twin seaters. So it's not just men who are interested

Waddya mean - I'll have you know I have a T-shirt from when they had the original campaign to save the Vulcan from being grounded! AND I received a Vulcan DVD for Christmas!

Seriously, I do hope this lovely lady stays in the skies; it's beautiful, and my favourite aircraft.
