I have my father's birth certificate dated 20th March 1924 which states that his father was a Robert Howard Corkhill of 8 Beverley Road, New Ferry. This gentleman had no input to my father's upbringing but I am curious to find out what I can about him. However, I can find nothing at all about him on either this or the Ancestry site.

Any advice or guidance please?

Dave

Might help if I spelt the surname correctly

david Report 10 Feb 2011 18:49

I confirm that New Ferry is on the Wirral.

My father's mother's name was Margaret Mylcraine and she was living at 152 Windsor St, Liverpool, but they did not marry. Robert's occupation is listed as Grocer's shop assistant so I suspect he may have been quite young.

Margaret would have been 21 when she conceived so Patchems spot may have some legs as that would make Robert 28 when he fathered my Dad.

....and as a follow up, Margaret's mother's maiden name was Harriet Elizabeth Corkhill and she came from the IOM.

So if Robert and Maragert never married, your father would normally not have a father's name on his certificate.
Was he registered as Corkhill or Mylcraine ?

thanks for your replies. more info as requested.

Harriet married a Mylecraine in IOM. He died in 1903. She had Margaret by him in 1902. She then married Thomas Keig in 1912 in IOM and they subsequently moved to Liverpool about 1919.

Margaret then gave birth to my dad (Sidney) by this Robert Corkhill in Feb 1924. He was brought up by his grandparents (Thomas and Harriet Keig) and adopted their name. However, the name on his birth certificate is Sidney Corkhill, i.e. that of his natural father.

Margaret had another child, Kathleen, in 1925. Again, the surname on the birth certificate is given as Corkhill but the father is not listed. Kathleen was also brought up by the grandparents and also took the name Keig.

I am assuming (dangerous I know) that both of Margaret's children were fathered by the same chap but, by the time Kathleen was born, he had done a runner and therefore Margaret did not (or could not) enter his details when registering the birth.

Odd though that she still named both children by the same surname, Corkhill
