So, that is probably him in the 1851, with grandparents William and Catherine and his father, Thomas, the one christened in 1821. I cannot find the family in 1841! I wonder if both Thomas and Magdalene died. There is a CD available with memorial inscriptions from Fowlis Wester. I wonder if there would be any thing in that?

Hi
I can't find much more on census --

Does the marriage certs on Scotlands people show parents ?

I was just wondering if Catherine's (b c1883) marriage showed anything else ? Not sure who she married though. but Emma should know.

Best wishes
Barbara xx

There is this submitted record on the IGI - but it is also on Scotlandspeople:

JOHN LEITCH Pedigree
Birth: 06 OCT 1849 Fowlis Wester, Perth, Scotland

Parents:
Father: THOMAS LEITCH Family
Mother: ANN CAMERON

Possibly the Magdalene is a red herring? John does not seem to have ever known his parents. Maybe his grandparents called his mother Magdalene, ie "fallen woman", because he was born out of wedlock?

Hi Ladies, thank you for all your help with this one, it really has been puzzling me! According to my Great Great Grandad's marriage cert. the mother and father are definately shown as Thomas Leitch (Reputed) & Magdalene Cameron. If Thomas was the reputed father would it still be quite normal for Magdalene to have named her son as a Leitch after his father, nowadays would it not be more common for a single mother to give her own surname to her child?? I am going to try and steal some time tomorrow night when the kids are in bed and have a look at some of the info you have sent me. I'm like a dog with a bone with this one!!!
Thanks so much again for all your help!
Best Wishes
Emma

Barbara,

I meant to add, My Great grandmother Catherine Mary Leitch 1883 of Muthill, Perth was married to Colin Shiels 1893-1973 (they were married on 28/04/1916 - District of St George, Edinburgh).

Many Thanks

Just to add, on the marriage cert for Catherine Mary Leitch to Colin Shiels, the witnesses who signed the register were Annie Leitch and John Leitch ( would this not be her father and sister?)

Quite common for single mother to name child with reputed fathers surname...particularly if he acknowledge the child.....I have several cases in my tree including my great grandfather...

Would be unusual for the brides father to sign a marriage cert.....more likely to be her brother John
