Trying to find connections to Christopher Prest who arrived in Australia 1872. Travelling with him were Elizabeth, Jane, John and Martha.

Do you mean connections from country left behind, or what happened to all of them?
Any ages?
Thanks

Added,
Sorry, I am different Patricia, not original Patricia (for clarification)

Any connection would be great. Christopher was 36 when he came out to Australia in 1875 (I got the date wrong on orig. posting). Elizabeth 36, Jane 17, John 16 Martha 13 came with him under the name of Prest. Elizabeth was previously married to William Bainbridge and the three children belong to him, all born in Yorkshire. Elizabeth died soon after arriving and Christopher certified on her death certificate that he was her husband of 7 years, his profession being a Groom and that they had been married at Ripon. If Christopher married Elizabeth 7 years prior to her death that would have been in 1869 but 1871 cencus places William, Elizabeth, John and Martha all living in Quarry Cottage, Northowram,Yorkshire, Wm's profession being Groom. I can find no record of William's death and no record of C&E's marriage. Wm and Elizabeth were married at Ripon. This is a mystery family. I have no idea where Christopher went after Elizabeth's death. Martha kept the name Prest but Jane and John reverted to Bainbridge.
Any news of a connection to Christopher Prest or the death of William Bainbridge would be a help.

Thank you for all that info. I did have most of it. Do you have a connection to Martha or James? I appreciate your sharing with me.

I'm wondering if Elizabeth just left William, and moved in with Christopher?

Dvivorce was practically impossible in those days for most people.

The other wild possibility ......... and I HAVE come across this before

is that WIlliam Bainbridge became Christopher Prest for some reason .....

That they emigrated under that name,

and then possibly reverted back to Bainbridge after Elizabeth's death

Sylvia, I am just getting used to how these Thread postings work. Thank you for your input. Yes you found the Bainbridge family in the 1871 census. I thought that maybe Elizabeth ran off with Christopher Prest but not having found William on any further census records or in any death records have also thought that William and Christopher is one in the same but do not know how to prove it. Wouldn't William have had to have some ID before travelling and why would he have changed his name and not the names of the rest of the family? He must have committed some terrible crime to have gone to such lengths. What are your thoughts on this.
Patricia.

Patricia,

Maybe someone with access to the 1841 Census can tell you who William was living with, hopefully it will tell you who his parents were.

Patricia

Patricia Report 1 Nov 2010 08:15

Mel75,
William Bainbridge's father as far as I know was Isaac. I have no idea who his mother was. William's marriage certificate states that his father was Isaac..Nail Maker. William married Elizabeth Hill in the Ripon Cathedral Nov 23 1857. The 1851 Census has him living with his brother, John Bainbridge, Nailer and his nephew Isaac and niece Elizabeth. I haven't had any success finding him on the 1841 census.
The 1861 census has him living in Harrogate with Elizabeth, Jane and John...Here he is listed as..Coachman.
Patricia.

Ozibird,
Certainly sounds like it is my William but it is very confusing as on his Marriage Certificate it states that his father was Isaac...Nail Maker. Could that have been such a mistake? Big difference between John and Isaac.
