Sue in Sunny Worthing Report 12 Mar 2008 23:39

I have found William S Muir age 37, his wife Henrietta 35 & children Vivian 3 & Margaret 1 living in Wandsworth, London in the 1901 census but I can't make out what William's occupation is.

Could anyone have a look for me & see what you think?

Thanks everso much, Sue

Nurserymans clerk........are we on the same Muir?

Sue in Sunny Worthing

Sue in Sunny Worthing Report 12 Mar 2008 23:54

Yes I think so - he was born in Margate, Henrietta born in Falmouth.

I could see it said clerk but couldn't make out the word before that - I was looking at the original as the transcriber on The Genealogist site as it as a load of gobbledy gook!!

What do you think a Nurserymans clerk is?

**Ann**

**Ann** Report 12 Mar 2008 23:59

Well I would think it is some kind of book keeper, perhaps in market gardening/farming/flower growers a bit like todays farm shops! You get some really strange ones.....I saw one the other day A Fly Proprietor!

Sue in Sunny Worthing Report 13 Mar 2008 00:03

A Fly Proprietor!!?? Dare not even think about that one!!

Thanks for your help Ann, I'm going to try to find him in 1891 to see what his occupation was then, it might give us some clues

Rose

Thank you soooooooo much, I can't find him in 1891 either - thats what I've been doing, looking at 1891 census.

A seed merchant, so Ann was correct when she said something to do with market gardening.

Also the birth you have found is correct as I was wondering if his second name was Stewart/Stenart as that was his son Vivian's second name and Vivian gave it to his daughter

You wouldn't be able to find out without too much trouble when William married Henrietta would you? Don't worry if I'm asking too much!! I think her maiden name was Cornish

Thank you

I don't see the marriage in England or Wales.

Perhaps they married in Scotland?

Thank you for looking.

Maybe they did marry in Scotland - thats a long way from where she was born in Falmouth, isn't it?

Rose - do you have William in 1871 census? As I don't, was he in Scotland?
