Moggie, I have downloaded some of the documents and now have some good information thanks to you and the others. I'm having difficulty though with Henry Chamberlain, Mary Hewitt and their child Eliza. Could this Henry be the father of James (born c1803)? Looks like great work on the death records of James & Mary Ann.

This could be James's marriage although a bit late given that daughter Emma was born in 1827. Perhaps some kind person with credit for Familyhistoryonline could look this up for you.

Keith, I phoned my uncle tonight and he did mention that Peter James was in the Hussars (before I told him)! Wish he gave me more info to go on before, but still - we got there in the end. Even got back to c1803 with another James (father of Robert).

Robert, the condition of marriage entry is not transcribed, to see that you have to view the image.

That's fascinating, Jim, and obviously the mis-spelling didn't help. This seems to tie up some things, but I wonder where Robert (who I presume from a family source was his name) ended up? Does the lack of info in the 'Condition as to marriage' entry mean she was single or not - I suspect in those days if there was any skulduggery a tactful silence may have been necessary?

Well, I have visited the census' for 1841-61, which shows a Robert Chamberlain resident in Ipswich, but no record of a marriage or mention at all after 1861. There is the aforementioned inmate who was about 24 in 1871 (if he were father to this Robert who was 3 in 1841, that would have made him about 15).
I'd appreciate if anyone could make this crucial link somehow...

Robert Report 7 Apr 2008 14:36

Hi Keith, that's very intersting that your records show only a mother in the household at that time, as I had found a record for a Robert Chamberlain in Ipswich, who was incarcerated as a lunatic aged 24, occupation 'waterman.' (1871 census).Would have been about the right age. It would be extremely sobering to find out my namesake was a bit unstable (explains a lot, really)!
