The 1861 census has pieces missing. Perhaps Samuel Sigston and family are on the missing bits.

Gawd - I am feeling 'brain dead' now !

All I can say is just be thankful it doesn't say he is a 'cross-dresser' !

OOOh, just realised - 'politically incorrect' - no offence meant to anyone - I am just a 'tired grannie' with a strange sense of humour!

hi dea
i just went and got eliza may.s birth cert today she is defo the daughter of william may and mary may (nee barrett ) i also checked on the richard may dob1849 he is NOT the son of mary barrett although he does have the same fathers name as joseph & eliza may but richard was born in a totally differant part of leeds so the registrar that checked it out said it was unlikely to be the same father as joseph & eliza & he also told me that richards fathers profession was totally differant to eliza.s & joseph not sure where this leave us now lol
any ideas

Hi, Thanks for pointing that out. I still can't find William May the cloth dresser though. There's a George May b. 1825 - cloth dresser - on the 1841 census, with a brother William b. 1821 - who isn't a cloth dresser - that's the best I can do.

Dea

Dea Report 21 Apr 2008 15:34

Hi Christina,

Thanks for your input but if you look at the actual image on 1851 - the name is Mary May but as an afterthought a DO for ditto has been added and her brother Joseph is above as Barritt - therefore it has been mistranscribed as Mary May Barritt!

Hello Dea, I've come in late on this one, after everyone's done all the work. But, with nothing positive to add, can I just point out that William May married his Mary Barrett in 1849, therefore, her name would be May and not Barrett on the 1851 census.

Dea

Dea Report 21 Apr 2008 14:25

Thanks Choirman but that is 1871 Census - it is 1861 we are stuck on.

Any help is very welcome.

We have them on 1851 - Can't find any of them on 1861 !!!!!!!! dratt!!!!!!!!

Why can't we find Samuel Sigston + wife Ann on 1861 , or their daughter Margaret??

Samuel did not die until 1864!!!

They should all be there somewhere.

Dea Report 20 Apr 2008 17:21

Jacky,

Can you take another look at Wm + Mary's marriage cert for me please?

Are you sure that it is William's father John who is a stone mason as all the Barretts are coming up with that profession?

Also - what was Michael Barret's profession.

In fact, can you give me all the details from the cert or, better still, if you wouldn't mind, could you send me a copy please?

I will pm you my e-mail in case this is ok - If you do not wish to I will not be offended.

I admit Margaret - it is a little different to the other 'U's for unmarried but if you look at everything else on the page - the 'u's all have a 'curly bit' at the top and all the M's and N's are very straight and angular

I value your input but in this case - this Joseph is definitely her brother.

I think the person who checked the sheet has tried to change it to a 'M' in his confusion as the 'Do' for ditto underneath next to Mary May is in a thicker pen with a different style 'D' so I think this has also been added later.

Dea

Joseph in 1851 looks like he has M next to his name not U.
Do you think the initial is a mistake? It looks like it has been changed so possibly unmarried

Dea

Dea Report 20 Apr 2008 13:58

Margaret - NNNNNoooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!

Joseph is 'son-in-law' as in 'adopted son' - unmarried - brother of Mary - son of Ann by her previous marriage (as shown on 1841) !!!!!!!!!

1841: - at Woodhouse, Leeds,
Ann Sigston abt 1811 Yorkshire, England Leeds Town, Yorkshire
Emma Sigston abt 1840 Yorkshire, England Leeds Town, Yorkshire
Jane Sigston abt 1826 Yorkshire, England Leeds Town, Yorkshire
Samuel Sigston abt 1801 Yorkshire, England Leeds Town, Yorkshire
Sarah Sigston abt 1828 Yorkshire, England Leeds Town, Yorkshire

also - same household:

Joseph Barrett abt 1828 Yorkshire, England Leeds Town, Yorkshire
Mary Barrett abt 1827 Yorkshire, England Leeds Town, Yorkshire
Michael Barrett abt 1831 Yorkshire, England Leeds Town, Yorkshire

Please do not go along that route.!!!!!!

This IS Mary with son Joseph - the other Joseph is her brother!!
