He was born 1839c in Whiston Lancashire

married Esther also born Whiston 1846c

occupation 1881 coalminer.

They had children living with them by the name of Smith who were obviously Esther's from a previous marriage.

Just interested to see who they were living with and where and the occupations in 1891 and 1901

Yes - I would think she was unmarried

Ellen must have died between 1841 and 1851

Elizabeth went on to have another Ellen I think as there is an Ellen Swift born 1852 in Whiston with parents Elizabeth and John swift

There is a possible death of Adam below - I can't see him in a later census. In 1841 ages were rounded - I wonder whether she was described as a widow in her later marraige

Am I right in thinking that in 1841 the ages were rounded up to the nearest 5 years

Is that right?

Yes but I can't remember which way it was rounded. There may only have been two years difference in their ages, if he was rounded down

Margaret's birth cert or Peter's marraige cert should settle the issue of their father

1841 ages were rounded down to the nearest 5 for those over 15.
