Not knowing a great deal about religion, would being married in a Roman Catholic Church possibly make them having links with Ireland??? He did marry a Doherty which I think is quite an irish name.

This is a HUGE longshot and should be taken with a pinch of salt until proved. 1901 census a John Gilmore aged 9, would be old enough to have had a child in 1911 or 1912. His father is called Joseph so there is a tenuos link with names.
