hi jacqueline, yes she is,when i first found that her mum had the surname brown and they had scottish connections i thought this is going to be really hard tracing that side of the family, but i didnt think that james dignum would be harder to trace, although saying that im still stuck trying to trace the keenans, but thats another story

Do you have Harriet's birth cert? If not, Mary could have been married before she married James.

Wouldn't be surprised if James' surname had been mistranscribed / misheard at time of marriage so be a bit "loose" in the searching.

Might be worth trying to track Mary's mother back a few censuses - perhaps she married again? So that Mary may have had a different name?

Nothing obvious on FreeBMD though ...

Thank you!!

maybe Mary and James didn't marry.

Maybe James left Margaret Ray to be with Mary, and they couldn't get married

hi sylvia, and portland rose, sorry about not replying last nite fell asleep in the chair,i'd had a very busy day yesterday, the brown family in the 1871 census does'nt seem to be the same family as the spouse is down as mary and not marion,i had the same problem finding them in 1871,it does look like you could be right about margaret,if that is the case it looks, like i'll have to put james down as a no go area, and try and find out more about mary parents in scotland,THANKYOU,for all your help, best regards, donna
