I am trying to sort out this Presbury (alternative spelling PresTbury) family. The furthest back I have got is Sarah. Unfortunately this is her married name. I have her on 1851 census living 62 B ridge Street, Derby aged 36 and it states a WIDOW. By 1861 she has remarried a Peter Belfield and is living with her husband Peter, his two children Harriet and Peter 16 and 12 respectively, plus two of her own children Bessy/Betsy and George plus a child William which she has obviously had by Peter Belfield. In order to possibly progress further on the Presbury/Prestbury line, I tried to find a marriage on freebmd of a Sarah? to a somebody Presbury to try and find her husband. No success. Right I thought, I'll try male deaths from 1851 to 1861 to see if I could see one in Derby - no success. Then I suddenly realised that she was supposedly a widow by 1851 and yet son George is only 6 in 1861 - a birth year presumably of 1855 !! Was she not a widow in 1851 or is George the child of an unknown but registered as a Presbury. I really need to find out who Sarah's husband was to be able to proceed. I would be really grateful for any help anyone can give. Thank you. |

Christine and Sylvia - thank you so very much for your hard work. I have struggled with this for ages ! and Sylvia, I think you could be solved the mystery -perhaps she described herself as a widow to preserve her reputation !! even though she seems to have destroyed it twice over !! Bless you both for helping me. |

Thank you Sylvia for the additional IGI info. It looks as if they could well be mine as Sarah Presbury did marry Peter Belfield later but he certainly wasn't the father of Mary, Betsy or George. On 1861 census Betsy and George are described as step=children and Mary does not appear at all. I think that they are either (a) all illegitimate children of Sarah or - if we have misjudged her - children of her first marriage. If that was the case, it would make the old Elizabeth Presbury her mother-in-law and not her mother !! I don't suppose we will ever know and unfortunately I don't think I will ever find out who was Sarah's father. Anyway, thank you very much for your help. |
