Find Ancestors

on my G Grandparents marriage cert:

Dec 25th 1906.
Birmingham.

James Docker. Age 33. Bachelor. Fitter.
His Father is named as John Docker - Brass Finisher.

Maud Lily Rhodes. Age 25. Spinster.
Her Father is named as Joseph Rhodes - Brass Finisher.


Witnesses: John Leonard Rhodes and Ada Rhodes.

I'm sure it's the right cert.

However, I can't find either James or Maud on any census' with those named Fathers.

Am I being thick??!

Yes, that's the one I found, but the Dad's name is different.

I wonder if there would be any reason not to give your Dad's real names?

I have ordered Maud's and James' birth certs, but they take 2 weeks to get to New Zealand and was hoping to find something in the meantime.

Looks like I'll have to be patient and wait for the birth certs!

Do you know when the fathers of the happy couple died?

It's possible that they only knew their fathers by the names that other people called them, or the names that the father chose to call himself. His "real" name could have been anything and his chosen name could have been his middle name. I have a few like that and they are a pain in the proverbial to track down.

Never thought of that!

Unfortunately, I don't know when they died, so that doesn't help me.

Well, I got the certs and yes, her Fathers name was Henry - goodness knows why she said it was Joseph!.

Anyway, now I have:

Maud Lily Docker born 6th Nov 1881, Aston, Birmingham to Henry and Laura Rhodes (nee Cowley).

And James Docker born 7th May 1871, Aston, Birmingham to John and Rebecca Docker (nee Orson).

I can now go look in the census for both of them- except for 1851, which I don't have access to.

If someone kind could do an 1851 census lookup, I'd be very grateful!
