Married Mary Ann Green 1875 Islington (I have certificate, his father was William)
Had 5 children all born in London:
Emma Marian 1876-1914
Albert James 1881-1918 (I have marriage certificate showing father as John James Smailes)
Rose Gertrude 1885-1915
Minnie Ethel 1887-1916
Amy Violet 1889-?
John died in 1891 Islington (I have certificate) aged 49
I have searched but not been able to find Census records for him can anyone find out where he was born?

Now, I mean this only slightly non-facetiously ... but I wonder whether he was related to the Jane Smailes that no one could find anywhere last week??

The common possibility is that his father had died (or sometimes not) and his mother remarried/formed a new household and the child was reported under the stepfather's surname. Let's have a look ... I promise not to go as nuts as I did in the Jane thread, lol. Sometimes wild theories are the absolute truth, sometimes they're just a way to spend two hours.

What age was he when he married?
His occupation?
His father's occupation?
Also Mary Ann's father's name and occupation?
Any sign of a sibling or other relation as witness on the certificate?

Uncle? Let's check that image.
-- edit -- the "Un" obviously for unmarried is in the wrong column; he would be "son".

Wrong father's name, if it's his father.

And now the right one in 1861. Will check image for middle initial.

He's a year older than he should be, and the middle initial is iffy, but there's no other birth in the GRO to be him.

(I like the occupation of the widow Robson next door: "Keeps A Mangle". Probably wasn't a lot of fun ...)

Now that Penelope has the birth date and place and parents' and siblings' names, I'll leave the fun for her.

Over to you, Penelope!

Thanks you lot, didn't expect so much so fast.
Snowflake - I already have the 1901 Census details.
Evie - the death certificate puts him born about 1842. John's marriage certificate states 'full age' and he was a Cooper (also on death cert.). His father William was deceased at the time of marriage, no other datails. Mary Ann was also 'full age' and her father was John Green, deceased.
Witnesses were George and Marian Gatrill.

You didn't say that in your header!!!!

Didn't say what?

John died in 1891 Islington (I have certificate) aged 49 (copied from header, work it out!).
John already dead by 1901.
Other details were asked for.

EvieBeavie

EvieBeavie Report 28 Nov 2008 20:25

I should have waited for the answers.

No, wait ... you should have given all the information you had in the first place.

You knew his DOB, you wanted people to look for him ... and youdidn't give his DOB ...

EvieBeavie

EvieBeavie Report 28 Nov 2008 20:31

Excuse me, work it out?

You meant that jocularly, I know.

You gave the info, but not in the form it was expected. It usually looks something like "born abt ___". We didn't recognize it. Creatures of habit.

Pen

Pen Report 28 Nov 2008 20:36

I don't have his date of birth just the age he was when he died - and I gave that!!

Pen

Pen Report 28 Nov 2008 20:42

I've spent a lot of time searching ancestry.co.uk and the only thing I have is that he may have been on board the 'Cobden' in Kent at the time of the 1881 Census. IF that is my relative then he was born in Middlesborough about 1840 but I can not be sure.
I was hoping there might be someone out there who has him as a sibling of a relative?

EvieBeavie

EvieBeavie Report 28 Nov 2008 20:47

Well, that's the one I was just about to copy here.

There's no matching birth, but registration wasn't mandatory.

It's possible a cousin may drop by someday. The odds are next to nil. We who enjoy digging up other people's bones took our shot.

Thanks. I do appreciate any help I get, and I've had my fair share from people on this site.
