Find Ancestors

Definitely an expensive business!!!


I bought 600 credits on Monday night, and had used over 300 of them by last night!!

BUT I did find my grandparents, with my mum aged 7 and her baby brother aged 4 months, plus grandmother's father living with them (a bonus!) .... and no other children born in the intervening time. Something I had wondered about!

I also found one set of husband's grandparents, as they lived in the West Riding of Yorkshire. Again the bonus was finding his grandfather's mother living with the newly weds!

Now I'm going to take it easy (at least on looking at the actual images) until Westmoreland and Wales appear.

I'm hoping that it will eventually be on ancestry .......... but if I remember correctly it was 2 or 3 years after the release of the 1901 census before it was on ancestry. I started doing my genealogy in 2003, and I used credits on te 1901census site at the beginning.


I'm also waiting for the time that we can use the wild card symbols, as I'm sure a few of mine have been mis-transcribed.

I've just used your tip about putting someone in 'other members of household' and found my mum's brother !

Mum could never understand why her brother was brought p by her grandparents. After finding him on the census [under his full name !] I've found the record of his birth ....... my grandparents got married a couple of months after his birth !

Another of life's little mysteries solved !

Gaille, I didn't think to do it like that, should be useful when I try tracking down the ones in yorkshire that are yet to be enumerated.

Didn't even think about going to Kew, might be worth doing the trip once the census is compelete.

Lucky you and all for free. I just live to far away to be able to do that but I can pass that info on to some friends in London. Irene

If anyone can get to Kew you can go on for free there, you have to go and book a computer and you get an hour at a time. just so others can have a go.You can re book for another hour once time is up. May have to wait until another computer is free. O went on 5 times.

I was there yesterday and find alot of mine, Yes some places are not on there yet but is being up dated al the time.

Had some teething problems but knew that would happen anyway, but like all the other census once you find your way round it and do like what you have done on them, if you are luck you find the ones you are looking for.

I came away very pleased with what i had found. Hoping to go again soon

Its expensive, but I have sourced the info which is more important to me first. Saving others for Yorkshire (I have quite a few there - frustrating).

It is great to see how long a couple have been married, how many children they have had, how many are still living and how many have died.

I have discovered one family line, originating in Norfolk, moved to Fulham, London for 1901 census, apparently had 7 children! Didn't know about the 4 which died, so will have to look again for them.

Also, having traced my grandfather's family in 1911. I find that my gt grandfather has given another place of birth in Shropshire. It has been different on every census since 1851, making it difficult to find his baptism! Got to check out another parish now! On the same family, I discover that there were 2 more children since the 1901 census. Ironically, I had found at my local archives a buriel of a little girl whos father matched that of my gt grandfather, but couldn't make a connection. Now I have. However there was another infant I didn't know about either! Off to find the graves now!

My tree has been in a bit of a lull for a while. The new 1911 census has given me more work to do now and has sparked me up again! Brill! So exited!

I've discovered that my granfather worked a s a Barman for the borough council for a while....have to check that one out too!

Off to get on with it all now.

I'm having trouble with transcriptions.

My Great Nan is always mistranscibed. Her Name's Grace Boakes b 1898

The I tried following the wildcard sugggestion and put in *kes.... then it tells me i can't have a * at the beginning!!!

I tried Bo*kes, Boa* etc... you names it and no results return.

I hate the fact you have to enter a surname. If i could fill in all the boxes and leave the surname out it would be brilliant!

I also like the address search... shame it doesn't tell you the head of the house first.

I suppose they have to get their money back somehow...

I like the fact you can put in a second household member or I would have never narrowed down the options for my great and great great grandad, not quite as bad as trying to track down a smith but I didn't realise how popular the name Green was until I started doing the family history.

A good number of my lot are Yorkshire based so I have had to wait until this week to start looking fo any of my lot. On Monday I tried it out and managed to find my Grandma. Yesterday, I tried to find other ancestors living in Leeds but the search came up with nothing. I decided to check out my grandma again to see if it was still finding her - it wasn't. So I am guessing that there are still a few issues with the system. Perhaps there were too many people looking all at the same time?

I found that my grandfather and his brother were 'Dick Labourers'...lol

When it's fine tuned it will be better. Spent some credits yesterday looking for my grandad born 1910. Brought up two possibles, both wrong. I know he was alive etc but a bit annoying to have to pay only to have it wrong. I know that happens elsewhere, wrong certs etc, but at least there are checks and balances before you spend the money. Hopefully ancestry or genes won't take too long to get it, and we can pay less or zip and browse to our hearts content!! Good luck to everybody else searching, hope you find what you need Linda :)

I have been looked for my great grandmother's birth of place that I want to buy her birth certificate because she was a foster in 1890s. 1891 and 1901 censuses, her birth of place was Lambeth and Woolwich.

So I was glad to find her 1911 census. However, she put it "not know" in her birth of place :-( I can't wait for 2021 to get 1921 census!

Have had great fun on 1911 in Dec and again today.Found all of the people i wanted to find and today found 1 of my Sussex ancestors-my GG Grandfather visiting a therapeutic spa called Smedley's in Derbyshire.He was the final piece of the puzzle on that side.

I do think its very expensive and wish there was a 30 day subscription of a set price.Ancestry aren't silly they know people are going to find children on the 1911 and their 1901 will be needed to be viewed!It was very slow on Ancestry tonight and i had quite a few technical problems also.

Oh Alice in Wonderland - what you found would have driven me mad, how frustrating.

Well - as I have a subscription for Ancestry.co.uk I'm a bit miffed that the credits are so expensive. It works out that a view of original is over £3. This is ridiculous, hoping the library may have it on disc or microfilm soon. I don't think there will be many free lookups offered!!! Found my dad on there, just need to get proper image.Happy searching everyone.

snap Ericthered...... My great grandfather also claims to have been married 44years, eldest daughter still single is living at home age 42, they in fact didn`t marry until 1875, ....... 6 years AFTER the birth of eldest daughter, was also handy for me as I found they had 3 other children, I didn`t know about who had died, and my grandmother and her husband and children were living with them as well, so got 2 families for the price of 1.

All in all i`m very pleased....

Its now running on Find My Past, what plans do Ancestry have?

We don't currently have plans to purchase the 1911 census early. We are currently focusing on sourcing historical records that go further back in history and will soon be launching the London Metropolitan Archives collection, which includes pre-1837 parish registers.
