I am trying to help a friend look for her family. My friend Penelopes' maiden name is Day. She was born in 1944 in Bath.
Her mother Jessie Maud Day died a couple of years after she was born.

She can remember nothing of her very early years only that she went to live with her grandmother in the Barking area. She lost her grandmother and eventually went to live in Dr Barnardos home.

She knows she had at least 3 brothers, Alfred ,John and Roger
but no idea of birthdates or where they went to live. She would dearly like to be able to trace them although she knows there is a great likelihood that one or two of them could have passed on.
She was the youngest sibling and believes there was a number of years between the other children being born till herself in 1944.

Her mother was Jessie Maud Crosby and we have found a marriage to Horace Day Dec qtr 1929.

Can someone please tell me if all the births only show the mothers maiden name as I can only find one child born in 1930 with the mothers name as Crosby on freebmd although I am aware that not all names are listed. Thank goodness for volunteers!

If there is anybody that can help in any way we would be so grateful.

Thank you Rose

From 1911 mothers' maiden names were listed on records.

Hi Irene, No death certificate of either parent Im afraid. Luckily she was given her birth certificate which states her mother and father
Jessie Maud Crosby - Horace Day.

As her birth was in Bath and her parents family were in the Barking area she thinks maybe her parents evacuated.

Many thanks Rose

the romford connection looks promising. i'd be inclined to send for Brian J Day's birth cert to see who his parents were. I know £7 maybe expensive but it wouold give a lead.

Sheila Report 14 Jan 2009 16:39

Is this the birth you found ?

Day Brian J Crosby Romford 4a 887

this may be to the Jessie Maud born 1906 Romford, could they have come from Romford not Barking ?

Irene

Irene Report 14 Jan 2009 16:39

I cannot have the right death as I see they married 1929. Jessie's death should be there somewhere - I must have missed it/ Birth must be wrong to that I found for Jessie. Sorry -Irene

Yes Mel I realize it was the wrong details. If the death was found then the Mum's age would show and then we would know when she was born. Irene

Hi Irene, Just spoke to Penny she is quite sure she was only about 2 when her mother died. She was born Aug 1944 so the death of her mother could be late 1945 till 1947?
She went to Barnardos Barkingside but I dont know at what age.

She thinks there could have been 5 children in the family. Surprised only 1 birth has shown as she was the last to be born!

Thank you Rose

Rose I think your friend needs to get in touch with Barnardos at Ilford and ask for a copy of her admission form. I got a copy of my grandfathers and it was very detailed and gave all the information on his parents and siblings and why he was admitted.
I have searched again for the death of Jessie and could not find it.
I found a marriage 3rd quarter 1945 after your friend was born of Jessie M Day and Francis A J Vincent and thought that was why I could not find her at her death but looked through again for Jessie Vincent and could not find her death.
The siblings of your friend I found Brian J Day mothers maiden name Crosby 1930 then searched right through to the end of 1933 and found no more children yet. It takes a long time as there are 4 quarters each year and Day is a common name so have to search 2 whole pages each quarter.
I think it is terrible your friend has got to 60+ and does not know her roots. Barnardos I am sure can help.
Perhaps a copy of the birth certificate of Brian J Day will help a little.
Good luck - perhaps some of the night people can seach 1933 - 1944 for you.

Hi
I've searched birth records from 1933-1946
Roger A Day.mmn: Crosby. pob: Romford. Jan-Mar qtr. 1937. vol 4a page 806.
Nothing then until Penelope in 1944. After that ,just to confuse matters, there were 2 births in 1946. Rose M A Day.mmn: Crosby. pob: Cleveland, Jan-Mar qtr.1946 Vol.9d page 688. There is either a correction to that registration or a 2nd birth of a Rosemary A Day.mmn Crosby. pob: Cleveland Jan-Mar qtr. 1946. vol 9d page16. This 2nd entry is handwritten at the bottom of page.
Hope this helps
Sue

im wondering if Brian J Day was a Brian John Day hence your friend remembering a John and with Suzanne finding Roger A Day i wonder if this could be Roger Alfred Day hence the Aldred. Do you think there could be a little confusion over the names?

Hi Irene, Yes it is sad that Penny has got to 64 and is now looking for her parents, my fault Im afraid cos I love searching for my family and offered to help as much as I could.
Penny mentioned brothers Alfred, John and Roger and there could have been 5 children in the family. You found a Brian 1930 and with Penny herself that makes 5! Will pass on your advice to contact Barnardos.
Maybe she didnt have brothers Alfred and John, she only has a birth certificate and memories from her Nan which over the years can distort.
Very strange that a death cannot be found for Jessie Maud Day. gosh I hope her Nan didnt cover the truth.

Hi Sue, You may have found Roger, this is great.

I will pass all this info to Penny so that she can decide what to do next.

Thank you everyone you have been most helpful, wouldnt know what to do without you.

Hi Debdob, How fascinating, yes there can be confusion over names as we know when trying to trace back and someone changed their christian name, if they only knew all the trouble they cause us!
My fiance was known as John to all my family, their faces were a picture apparently when the rector said do thee Albert take..... His father was also Albert, known as Bert, they decided to use his middle name so it would be less confusing!!!

I'll put these theorys to Penny, let her mull them over, certainly something for her to think about.

Thank you very very much Rose
